Normandale Community College GPA Calculator

Normandale does not use plus/minus grading (no A+, A-, B+, etc.) — only the five letter grades above are assigned. A grade point average (GPA) is calculated by multiplying each grade's point value by the credits attempted, then dividing the total grade points earned by the total credits attempted.

Only grades of A, B, C, D and F count toward the GPA. Grades of I (Incomplete), W (Withdrawal), P/NC (Pass/No Credit), NA (Never Attended), NW (Never Officially Withdrew), AU (Audit) and Z (in progress/no grade reported) are excluded from the GPA calculation, even though several of them are recorded internally as a 0-grade-point value.

Students may repeat a course to improve a grade; both the original and repeated grades remain on the transcript, but only the higher grade is used to calculate the GPA. A course may be repeated twice — a third repeat attempt requires approval by academic petition.

Academic renewal lets a student exclude prior coursework from their GPA and credit calculations once they have completed at least 12 credits at Normandale with a minimum 2.00 GPA following the renewal term(s). When granted, courses with grades of D, NC, F, NW and W in the renewal term(s) are excluded from the Normandale GPA; the coursework and grades still appear on the transcript, and a transcript notation records that renewal was applied. A student may be granted academic renewal only once.

All students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 and complete at least two-thirds (66.66%) of their cumulative attempted college-level (1000-and-above) credits. Progress is evaluated after every fall, spring and summer term.

A student who misses either standard is placed on warning for one evaluation period. A student on warning who still has not met both standards by the end of that period is suspended (ineligible to register or receive financial aid). A student who successfully appeals a suspension is placed on probation for one evaluation period under an academic plan; an approved plan requires a minimum term GPA of 2.50 (for a GPA deficiency) and/or 100% term completion (for a completion deficiency) to remain on probation.

Among the college's graduation requirements, a student must earn a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 in all college-level coursework in order to receive a degree or certificate.

Each semester, students enrolled in at least 9 credits who complete the semester with a GPA of at least 3.50 are named to the Dean's List, with a transcript notation and recognition from the Vice President of Academic Affairs/Provost.

At commencement, associate degree graduates receive honors for a cumulative Normandale GPA of 3.00-3.49 in college-level (1000-and-above) courses, and high honors for 3.50 or higher; honors are not awarded for certificates. For spring and summer graduates, ceremony honors are based on the cumulative GPA through the prior fall semester, while final honors on the transcript and diploma reflect all completed coursework.

Grades earned in transfer coursework are not computed into a student's GPA on the Normandale transcript, but they are included when calculating the GPA required for the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) and for graduation.

College courses graded A, B, C, D or P at a regionally accredited institution are considered for transfer; but if the student's cumulative GPA at the originating institution was below 2.00, only grades of P, C or higher transfer (unless the course satisfies an MnTC goal). Up to 16 credits of technical-college coursework transfer only if the student's cumulative GPA at that technical college was 2.0 or higher (subject to the same MnTC exception). Duplicate credit is never awarded for equivalent courses.
