GPA Computation Rules

Course Repeat Policy: a course taken for credit may be repeated up to two additional times, including withdrawals; credit hours count only once, and only the most recent grade counts toward the GPA, even if it is the lowest.

Pass/Fail option: a grade of Pass (P) indicates equivalent work of D or better and is not computed into a student's semester or cumulative GPA; a grade below D under the Pass/Fail option is instead assigned as a letter grade and is computed into the GPA.

Academic Bankruptcy: excludes all credits and grades for one entire term from the GPA calculation (the courses remain on the record with a bankruptcy notation). It may be granted only once in a student's career, only after a subsequent term with a 2.000 GPA in at least 6 graded credits and no withdrawals, and does not modify any prior repeat, warning, probation, suspension, or dismissal actions.

Academic Standing

A student in good standing has a cumulative GPA of 2.000 or better.

  • Academic Warning: issued to a freshman in a baccalaureate program whose cumulative average is 1.750 to 1.999, for one semester only, and cannot follow a term on probation.
  • Academic Probation: applies to an associate's-degree student whose cumulative average falls below 2.000; a freshman baccalaureate student below 1.750; or an upperclassman baccalaureate student below 2.000. Removed once the cumulative average returns to 2.000 or above.
  • Academic Suspension: a student on probation who fails to restore a 2.000 cumulative average within two semesters is suspended; a freshman or probationary student who receives more than one failing grade in a single term is also suspended. One fall or spring term must elapse before reapplying.
  • Academic Dismissal: a student readmitted after suspension who fails to meet the terms of readmission is dismissed and not eligible to return.

Degree Residency Requirement

At least one-half of the course requirements of the major or minor, and the last 30 semester hours, must be completed at Xavier University for all undergraduate degrees. At least 60 semester hours toward a bachelor's degree must be earned at accredited four-year institutions.

Graduation Honors

Honors are awarded on the basis of outstanding achievement at the undergraduate level only, based on quality point average in Xavier course work:

  • Bachelor's degree: 3.900–4.000 summa cum laude; 3.750–3.899 magna cum laude; 3.500–3.749 cum laude.
  • Associate's degree: 3.900–4.000 "with highest honor"; 3.750–3.899 "with high honor"; 3.500–3.749 "with honor."

Transfer students are eligible for these honors if they have completed at least 60 quality hours at Xavier for a bachelor's degree, or at least 30 quality hours at Xavier for an associate's degree.

Transfer Credit Policies

Credit for college-level coursework from another accredited institution is accepted for courses in which a grade of C or better was earned; the transfer credit is recorded, but not the grade, and it is not computed into a student's Xavier GPA.

Greater Cincinnati Consortium courses are the exception: both the credit and the grade are recorded on the Xavier record, and the quality points are computed into the Xavier GPA.

Study abroad: Xavier Study Abroad/Faculty-Led programs record the letter grade and compute it into the Xavier GPA; Xavier-affiliated study abroad, the Fredin Scholarship, Direct Exchange, and non-Xavier-affiliated programs instead award transfer credit only (grade of C or better required) that is not computed into the GPA.

How do I convert semester GPA to cumulative GPA at Xavier University?
Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester GPAs across every semester: (semester GPA₁ × credits₁ + … + semester GPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + … + creditsₙ). Save each semester to the tracker on this page, by course or as a quick semester GPA + credits entry, and it works out your cumulative GPA on every save, edit and delete.
Is this Xavier University GPA calculator free, and is my data private?
Yes. GPAWise is free, with no signup, and your courses and saved semesters stay in your browser: nothing is sent to our servers. "Clear all tracker data" on the tracker wipes them at any time.
