Central Washington University (CWU) GPA Calculator

Grading policy is the responsibility of individual instructors, as long as students are notified of the policy at the outset of a course and it is applied consistently within the course. Departments may establish course-specific (not instructor-specific) grading standards that guide individual instructors, applied uniformly across all sections and in place before the first day of instruction.

Grade point averages are calculated by dividing grade points earned by credit hours attempted. Only coursework attempted at Central is included, except for major, minor, and professional education program GPAs, which use grades earned in all allowed courses.

Credits earned under the Credit/No Credit option and Emergency Pass/Fail (EP/EF) grades are not included in GPA computation. When a course is repeated, only the last grade earned is used in the cumulative and major GPA (all grades remain on the official record).

Academic Forgiveness: an undergraduate returning after an absence of at least five years may petition, once only, to have CWU grades below C- (D+, D, D-, F) earned before the return excluded from the cumulative GPA; those credits still count toward the 180-credit graduation requirement but not toward GPA of majors or honors eligibility.

Undergraduate standing has four tiers based on quarterly and cumulative GPA: Good Standing (both GPAs 2.0 or higher); Academic Warning (quarterly GPA below 2.0); Academic Probation (quarterly GPA below 2.0 for two consecutive quarters with cumulative GPA also below 2.0); and Academic Suspension (quarterly GPA below 2.0 while already on probation), which bars enrollment for up to one academic year subject to appeal.

Graduate students whose cumulative GPA falls below 3.0 at the end of any quarter are placed on academic probation for the next quarter, during which they may not hold a graduate assistantship or nonresident tuition waiver, and may not proceed with a culminating experience.

A bachelor's degree requires a minimum of 180 credit hours.

A graduate degree requires a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0; courses on the approved course of study must average at least 3.0 (B), and no credit is accepted toward the course of study for a grade below C.

Undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and non-matriculated students who earn a quarterly GPA of 3.5 or higher, with a minimum of 10 A-F graded college-level credits that quarter, are named to the quarterly honor roll. Developmental courses do not count toward the quarterly GPA for this purpose.

A CWU course that is repeated at another institution, and approved by the department, can be transferred in for CWU credit and is used in calculating both the CWU GPA and the transfer GPA.
