Pass/No Credit and grade notation
In addition to letter grades, students may elect to take some courses for Pass/No Credit (P/NC) instead of a letter grade. To receive this option, the student must continue participating in all academically related activities, complete assignments, and take the culminating experience/final exam, and must request the option before the last day a student can withdraw and receive a grade of "W."
If a passing grade (A+ through D-) is earned under this option, the student receives "P" and course credit, with no impact on GPA. If a failing grade (F) is earned, the student receives "NC/NP," which also does not affect the GPA. Individual colleges may add further stipulations, published in their own bulletin/website.
Plus ("+") and minus ("-") grades are interpreted as "+0.3" and "-0.3" relative to the base letter, except where otherwise noted in the glossary.

What counts toward GPA, and the F-Repeat policy
Only grades carrying a printed numerical quality-point value are included in the GPA calculation; grades marked with a dash in the university's grade glossary carry no numerical value and are never included.
Under CUNY's F-Repeat policy (Board of Trustees, effective September 1, 1990, university-wide), an undergraduate who earns "F" or an administrative failing grade computing as zero quality points (F, WU, WF, U, FAB, FIN, FPN) and subsequently retakes the same course at the same CUNY college, earning "C" or better, has that original failing grade excluded from the cumulative GPA calculation. The "F" remains visible on the transcript; only its effect on the GPA is removed.
- The exclusion is capped at 16 failing credits for the student's entire undergraduate enrollment across CUNY, including if the student transfers between CUNY colleges.
- A failing grade cannot be partially excluded; residual credits under the 16-credit cap must equal or exceed the credits of the course being excluded.
- Students may petition the registrar to opt out of having a failing grade excluded.

Retention and probationary status
CUNY mandates uniform student retention standards across all CUNY colleges: decisions about whether a student may continue at a CUNY college are made on the basis of the student's cumulative grade point average (GPA), calculated from quality points as defined in the university's grade glossary.
Any notation of a student's probationary status appears only on the unofficial transcript.
