Butte College GPA Calculator

Letter grades of A, B, C, D, F, and FW are used to determine a student’s GPA. Grades of P, NP, I, W, EW, MW, IP, and RD have no effect on GPA.

• P (Pass) — awarded for satisfactory work (C or better); not included in GPA.
• NP (No Pass) — coursework is not satisfactory or failing; not included in GPA.
• I (Incomplete) — unforeseeable emergency prevented completing coursework; not included in GPA.
• W (Withdrawal) — withdrawal through the 12th week of instruction; not used in calculating GPA.
• EW (Excused Withdrawal) and MW (Military Withdrawal) — petition-based excused/military withdrawals; not counted in GPA.
• IP (In Progress) and RD (Report Delayed) — temporary notations pending a final grade; not used in calculating GPA.

The Pass/No Pass option is available for most courses; a maximum of 8 units optionally graded P may count toward an associate degree, and a maximum of 6 units toward a certificate of achievement.

Enrollments graded A, B, C, D, F, FW, P, NP, or W count as an attempt. For repeatable courses, up to two substandard grades may be alleviated by petition; for non-repeatable courses, a substandard grade of D, F, FW, NP, or W allows one automatic repeat, with a third attempt possible by approval. When a repeat alleviates a prior grade, the earlier substandard grade is removed from GPA calculation while remaining legible on the transcript.

Academic Renewal allows substandard prior coursework to be excluded from the cumulative GPA once at least one year has elapsed, subject to further coursework thresholds (e.g. 15 consecutive units at 3.00 GPA, 24 units at 2.50 GPA, or 36 units at 2.00 GPA since the work to be alleviated). A maximum of 30 semester units may be alleviated this way, and the excluded work must not be needed for the degree or transfer sought.

Good standing requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 in all units attempted. A student is placed on Academic Probation when cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 (once at least 12 cumulative units have been attempted), and on Progress Probation when 50 percent or more of units attempted in a semester are graded W, I, and/or NP.

Students are dismissed after three consecutive semesters of academic and/or progress probation without sufficient improvement, and may be required to sit out up to one year. Removal from probation requires a Butte College cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher and fewer than 50 percent of attempted units graded W, I, or NP.

The Local General Education Guide for the AA/AS degree requires an overall grade point average of 2.0 (“C” average) or better, alongside 60 semester units of degree-applicable coursework, a C grade or better in every course of the declared major, and a minimum of 12 semester units completed in residence at Butte College. A maximum of 8 semester units optionally graded P may count toward the degree.

Each semester, students in good standing who complete 15 units of GPA-applicable coursework (numbered 1-199 or C1000-C1999) are placed on the Honors List: Academic Distinction for a semester GPA between 3.75 and 4.0, and Academic Excellence for a semester GPA between 3.50 and 3.74. Graduating students with an overall cumulative GPA between 3.50 and 4.0 receive the “with Honors” notation on their permanent record and a gold honors cord at commencement.

Credit from other regionally accredited colleges and universities may transfer toward associate degree, certificate, or general education requirements after official transcripts are evaluated by Admissions & Records. Coursework from outside the United States requires a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES-approved credential evaluation service before submission. Butte College also awards credit for Advanced Placement (AP) exam scores of 3, 4, or 5, as well as for CLEP and International Baccalaureate exams, which may be applied toward degree and certificate requirements.
