Grade Forgiveness & Course Repeats

The last grade recorded for a repeated course is the grade used to calculate a student's cumulative GPA, though all attempts remain on the transcript.

A course in which a student earned a "D," "F," or withdrew without a grade may be repeated up to twice at standard cost. A third or later attempt carries an additional full-cost-of-instruction fee (first attempts counted from Fall 1997). A fourth attempt requires written petition to the Vice President for Student Affairs.

Probation, Suspension & Dismissal

A student is placed on academic probation if: on probation or suspension at another institution upon transfer to SJR State; re-admitted after academic suspension; or their cumulative GPA in college credit courses falls below 2.0 once seven college credit hours have been attempted. While on probation, a student must earn at least a 2.0 GPA each semester and may not register for more than 14 credit hours or officially represent the college; probation ends once the overall GPA reaches 2.0.

A student on probation who fails to earn a satisfactory cumulative or semester GPA (minimum 2.0) is placed on academic suspension and may not enroll the following semester, pending a Return after Suspension Curriculum. A further suspension results in academic dismissal for three terms, pending an Early Return after Dismissal Curriculum. Both curricula run only in September, October, February, March, April, and May.

Incomplete Grades & Graduation Eligibility

Students are not eligible for graduation or honors lists until all "I" (Incomplete) grades have been removed from their academic record. An "I" grade must be resolved within 30 calendar days of the start of the next term; "I" grades may also affect financial aid eligibility.

President's List & Dean's List

Full-time students (minimum 12 college credit hours in a fall or spring term, or 6 hours in both Summer A and Summer B) are recognized each term based on GPA:

  • President's List — GPA of 3.8 to 4.0.
  • Dean's List — GPA of 3.5 to 3.79.

Repeated Courses on Transfer

Students are cautioned that other public and private institutions may treat "forgiven" grades differently when calculating a transfer GPA: a repeated course's earlier grade may not be accepted at all, or every attempt may be counted. Financial aid coverage for repeated courses can also vary.
