Semester GPA to cumulative GPA at UMGC — how the conversion works

Your cumulative GPA is not a plain average of your semester GPAs: each semester is weighted by the credit hours it carried. The formula is:

Cumulative GPA = (GPA1 × credits1 + GPA2 × credits2 + … + GPAn × creditsn) ÷ (credits1 + credits2 + … + creditsn)

Heavier semesters pull the cumulative figure harder than lighter ones, which is why two students with the same average semester GPA can end up with different cumulative GPAs. Save each semester to the tracker and it runs this formula on every save, edit and delete.

Add past semesters without entering every course

For older semesters, choose Quick — Semester GPA + credits only on the tracker and enter the semester's name, the semester GPA on your transcript and the credit hours it carried. Semesters saved by course and quick-added ones mix freely. A semester saved by course counts its courses' own grade points; a quick-added one counts the figure you typed, which is already rounded, so the two can differ by 0.01 in the cumulative GPA.
