Grades are reported to the Office of the University Registrar for all students, with grade points computed per semester hour of credit. Grade point averages are truncated, not rounded, to the second decimal place — for example, 2.856 truncates to 2.85.

Beyond the standard letter grades, Miami University uses a set of non-letter grade symbols for special situations (Incomplete, Audit, Pass/No-Credit, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, Withdrawal, and academic-dishonesty sanctions). Most of these carry no grade points of their own and are excluded from GPA calculation.

Grade point average (GPA) hours are hours in courses taken at Miami University that receive standard letter grades, including a grade of Incomplete (“I”). GPA hours exclude transfer hours, AP/CLEP hours, pass/fail or credit/no-credit coursework, audits, proficiency credit, English portfolio hours, and standard letter-grade hours dropped with a W.

A semester or term average is the student’s total credit points for that term divided by GPA hours attempted that term; the cumulative average is total Miami grade points divided by total Miami GPA hours.

A grade of Incomplete calculates as an F until it is removed, and converts to F automatically if not resolved by the end of the following semester (excluding summer or winter term for undergraduates).

Good academic standing requires a minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA. An undergraduate with fewer than 16 cumulative GPA hours whose GPA falls below 2.00 is placed on academic warning; the student is removed from warning once cumulative GPA reaches 2.00 or better.

A student with 16 or more cumulative GPA hours and a cumulative GPA below 2.00 is placed on academic probation. A student with 30 or more cumulative GPA hours whose term GPA falls below 2.00 while on probation is suspended for two consecutive semesters or terms (winter term excluded from the count). Failure to meet standards after suspension results in academic dismissal — generally a permanent action, though a dismissed student may petition for readmission after a two-year absence.

The President’s List recognizes the top 3% of undergraduates within each academic division (12 or more credit hours attempted for grades A+ through F in a semester or term, excluding winter term); the Dean’s List recognizes the next 17%. Minimum GPA thresholds vary by division:
