Radford University (RU) GPA Calculator

A student's GPA is computed by multiplying the number of semester hours for each course by the grade points earned, adding the totals for the period, then dividing by the total semester hours attempted. Grades of N (audit), I (incomplete), NR (no grade recorded), ON (temporary/ongoing course), P (pass, 'C' or better), and W (withdrew) carry no grade points and are not counted in the GPA.

Students may repeat any course once; the most recent grade counts toward the GPA even if it is lower than the original, though both grades remain on the transcript. Additional credit hours are not awarded for a repeat unless the original grade was 'F'. Courses may be re-taken again ('retakes') without a repeat limit, with all attempts and grade points counted in the GPA.

The pass-fail option is limited to students with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00. A passing grade (equivalent to 'C' or better) adds to hours completed without affecting GPA; a failing grade under pass-fail is calculated into the GPA as an 'F'.

Students fall to Academic Notice 1 if their cumulative GPA drops below 2.0. Failure to bring the semester GPA to 2.0 or above while on Notice 1 moves a student to Academic Notice 2, and a further semester GPA below 2.0 on Notice 2 results in Academic Suspension. Students suspended a second consecutive time without reaching a 2.0 semester GPA are assessed Academic Dismissal and may not enroll at Radford for three years. Students returning from suspension or dismissal are restricted to 13 semester credit hours until they return to good standing (cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above).

Graduation requires a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher (some majors require higher), a minimum of 120 semester hours, and total grade points at least twice the total semester hours attempted, both overall and in the major. At least 30 semester hours (or 25% of an associate degree's hours) must be earned at Radford University.

The Dean's List recognizes students who complete 12 semester hours graded A-F with a term GPA of at least 3.4, no grade below 'C', and no Incompletes.

At graduation, a cumulative GPA of 3.50-3.69 earns cum laude, 3.70-3.84 earns magna cum laude, and 3.85 or higher earns summa cum laude; all three require at least 60 semester hours earned at Radford. Students with a 3.50+ GPA but fewer than 60 Radford hours graduate 'With Distinction' instead.

Transfer credit can satisfy course requirements but the grades are not used in computing a student's Radford GPA, and the Repetition of Courses policy does not apply to transfer coursework. Courses taken Pass/Fail, or with a grade of 'C-' or lower, are not accepted for transfer credit, and only credit from a regionally accredited institution (or equivalent military training) is considered.
