Grade notations

Monroe University transcripts record letter grades, each with a numerical value on a 4-point scale. Beyond the graded letters, several administrative notations appear on the transcript:

  • I (Incomplete) — assigned only in rare circumstances with prior approval; automatically changes to an F if not completed before the add/drop period.
  • AW (Administrative Withdrawal) — a punitive grade for students who leave the University for a disciplinary reason; counted as an attempted course and calculated as an F in the GPA.
  • UW (Unofficial Withdrawal) — a grade-neutral notation for students who discontinue attendance without official notice; not included in the GPA.
  • W (Official Withdrawal) — assigned for an official course withdrawal after the add/drop period; does not affect the GPA.
  • Not computed in the GPA: AU (Audit), P (Satisfactory completion), PL (Prior learning credit), PR (Proficiency credit), R (Must repeat the course), TR (Transfer credit).

Calculating the GPA

Semester GPA: for each course, multiply the grade's numerical value by the number of course credits to get grade points; total the semester's grade points and divide by the number of credits attempted.

Cumulative GPA: add up grade points across all semesters and divide by the total credits attempted at Monroe University.

Transfer credits, "P" grades, and grades for non-credit courses are not included in the GPA calculation. If a repeated course is passed after a prior F (or AW), the new grade replaces the original in the GPA calculation; if a student fails a course more than once before passing it, the passing grade replaces only one of the F grades. All grades for courses attempted remain on the transcript regardless of repeats.

Standards of Academic Progress

Academic standing is reviewed at the end of each semester against a minimum required cumulative GPA:

SemesterRequired cumulative GPA
10.75
21.25
31.50
41.75
5–122.00

Students who fail to meet the required cumulative GPA at the stated semester are academically dismissed (with a right to appeal for unusual circumstances). Students with a cumulative GPA below 2.0 are separately placed on academic alert, which does not affect financial-aid eligibility but flags the need for academic support.

GPA requirement for graduation

To graduate, a candidate must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and a minimum GPA of 2.0 in their major area. Some degree programs may set additional requirements.

Academic honors

Semester Honors (full-time load of at least 12 credit-bearing credits, no grade below C): President's List 3.80–4.00, Dean's List 3.60–3.79. Students who earn an "R" in any course, or who have a confirmed academic-integrity violation that semester, are not eligible.

Latin/Commencement Honors (by cumulative GPA at commencement): Summa Cum Laude (With Highest Honor) 3.80–4.00, Magna Cum Laude (With High Honor) 3.60–3.79, Cum Laude (With Honor) 3.40–3.59.

Transfer credit grading

A grade of C or better is required for a course to be accepted as transfer credit (some schools or programs may require higher). Because Monroe University does not generally transfer the value of letter grades, accepted transfer credits do not carry a grade value into the Monroe University GPA.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at Monroe University?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at Monroe University?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Monroe University GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
