Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) GPA Calculator

HVCC grades on a 4.0 scale with five letter grades: A (4), B (3), C (2), D (1), and F (0), corresponding to numerical bands of 90-100, 80-89, 70-79, 60-69, and below 60.

There is no A+ and no plus/minus grading at all — A itself, at 4.0, is the top of the scale.

Several marks appear on a transcript but carry no quality points and are not computed in your grade point index: I (Incomplete), IP (Course in Progress), P (Pass), S (Satisfactory), W (Withdrew), AW (Administrative Withdrawal), Z (Absent Without Withdrawal), AU (Audit), AZ (Audit Unofficial Withdrawal), EXM (Excused Medical), and any grade preceded by "R" for a remedial course.

Your grade point index is calculated by multiplying each course's quality-point value by its credit hours, summing those products, and dividing by your total GPA hours attempted.

If you repeat a course, only your highest grade counts toward your average, although both attempts remain on your transcript — repetition is permitted twice. Special permission from the department chairperson is required to repeat a course you already passed with a "C" or better.

You're in good academic standing once you've attempted three or more college-level credits and both your term and cumulative GPA are 2.0 or higher.

Falling below 2.0 places you on Academic Support; still below 2.0 the following semester moves you to Academic Warning (registration limited to 14 credits); still below 2.0 after that moves you to Academic Probation (registration limited to 8 credits). You return to good standing once both your term and cumulative GPA reach 2.0 again.

Students who lose good standing under exceptional, largely-out-of-their-control circumstances may apply for a one-time waiver, and a Fresh Start option lets a returning student exclude prior "D"/"F" coursework from a recalculated GPA (usable once only, and not recognized for federal financial-aid Satisfactory Academic Progress).

To earn an associate degree or certificate, you must attain a 2.0 grade point index among the courses required for your program, complete all prescribed courses with a passing grade, meet minimum credit requirements, and satisfy the college's Residency Policy — a minimum of 30% of required program credits earned at Hudson Valley itself.

Each fall and spring, full-time students with a term average of 3.00 to 3.49 qualify for the Dean's List, and those with 3.50 to 4.00 qualify for the President's List — both require no grade of "D," "F," "I," "Z," or "W" (or a remedial equivalent) that term. Part-time students registered for at least six credits qualify under the same GPA bands.

You graduate with academic honors if your cumulative or degree GPA is 3.5 to 4.0 at the time of degree conferral.

Credit accepted in transfer appears on your HVCC transcript with a "T" in the grade column and is not factored into your GPA.

To transfer a course in, you need a letter grade of "C" or better, or a numerical grade of 2.0 on a 4-point scale (or 70 on a 100-point scale) or better.
