Grading System
SMSU grades undergraduate coursework primarily on the A, B, C, D, F system, with grade descriptors indicating A: greatly exceeding standards, B: exceeding standards, C: meets standards, D: not yet meeting standards, and F: little to no evidence of meeting standards. Where a course offers the option, students may instead be graded Credit/No Credit (CR/NC); no more than 20 credits outside the major graded CR/NC count toward graduation.
Additional symbols may accompany either system: AU (Audited, no letter grade assigned), NA (Never Attended, for a student who does not attend or participate during the drop/add period), FQ (Failed Quit, for a student who stops attending after the drop/add period), W (Withdrawn, before the published withdrawal deadline), I (Incomplete — remaining work must be completed within 4 months, with one possible 4-month extension), and IP (In Progress, for practicum/internship/clinical courses spanning terms — must be completed within 2 years or converts to F/NC).

GPA Calculation Rules
Grade point averages are calculated to the second decimal place and are truncated, not rounded.
- Grades not counted in the GPA: W (Withdraw), AU (Audit), I (Incomplete), IP (In Progress), NC (No Credit), and CR (Credit).
- Cumulative Completion Rate (CCR) excludes AU (Audit), developmental courses (numbered below 100), and NC grades earned during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Academic Standing Requirements
GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's credits by its assigned quality points, summing across courses, and dividing by the number of credits earned.
- Minimum cumulative GPA required to remain in good standing: 1.60 for 0–29.99 attempted credits, 1.80 for 30.00–59.99, and 2.00 for 60.00 or more.
- Cumulative Completion Rate (CCR) is credits earned divided by credits attempted; students must complete at least 66.67% of cumulative attempted credits.
- When a course is repeated, only the best grade earned counts toward the GPA; all grades earned, including repeats, count toward the CCR.
