Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) GPA Calculator

Some grades are not included in MHCC's GPA calculation: S (Satisfactory), N (Not Satisfactory), I (Incomplete), K (Continuing Progress), X (Audit), W (Withdrawal), NR (Not received from instructor), and IP (Class still in progress).

• Some courses allow students to choose Satisfactory/Not Satisfactory (S/N) grading instead of a letter grade, selected by the end of the 7th week (or equivalent for shorter courses). "S" is equivalent to a grade of C or higher; "N" indicates performance below a C.
• An Incomplete (I) may be assigned when a student has completed at least 75% of coursework and circumstances beyond their control prevent completion. Remaining work must be completed by the end of the following term, or within a maximum of four quarters if not enrolled; if the deadline is missed, the grade automatically converts to an F.
• The K grade is assigned only in certain Developmental Education courses and indicates the student attended and made progress but did not complete enough to earn credit. Students who receive a K must re-register for the course, pay for it again, and successfully complete it to earn credit.
• Students may audit a course (no grade, no credit) by selecting the option by the end of the 7th week. Tuition and fees still apply, and audited courses are not eligible for financial aid.

MHCC calculates GPA by dividing total grade points earned by total credits attempted (for example, a 4-credit A plus a 4-credit B yields 28 points over 8 credits, for a 3.5 GPA). Grades are assigned based on work completed by the end of the scheduled class; additional work after the course ends is not permitted unless an Incomplete has been approved.

Students may repeat a course to improve their grade. The first repeat replaces the previous grade in the GPA calculation. Repeated courses count only once for credit towards a degree or certificate unless otherwise noted.

MHCC reviews academic performance at the end of each term. Students with a term GPA below 2.0 will be assigned an academic status and may be required to take specific actions.

• Warning is assigned to students with a term GPA between 1.5 and 1.99. Status is removed if the next term GPA is 2.0 or higher; if performance does not improve, the student may be placed on probation.
• Probation is assigned when the term GPA is 1.49 or lower, or the GPA remains below 2.0 for two consecutive terms. Students are encouraged to enroll in HD101 (On Track for College Success) and meet with an academic advisor. Probation is removed if the next term GPA is 2.0 or higher; otherwise the student may be placed on suspension.
• Suspension is assigned when a student continues to earn below a 2.0 GPA while on probation. The student is not eligible to enroll in classes, and suspension typically lasts at least one term.
• Students may appeal a suspension for compelling circumstances. If the appeal is approved, the student returns on probation status and must meet conditions set by the review committee, or risk suspension again. If denied, the student remains suspended for at least one term and must submit a new appeal to return.

To earn an associate degree, students must complete at least 90 credits (some programs require more), complete all required coursework in a career-technical, general studies, or transfer degree, and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA overall and in major courses. At least 12 credits must be completed at MHCC; non-traditional credit does not count toward this requirement.

Courses may only count toward one general education requirement, with the exception of Cultural Literacy ("double dipping"). Students should apply for graduation two terms prior to completion.

• President's Honor Roll: a GPA of 3.85 or higher and completion of a minimum of 12 credits.
• Dean's Honor Roll: a GPA of 3.65-3.84 and completion of a minimum of 12 credits (or 6 credits for part-time students).
• Rho Theta / Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (MHCC's chapter of the international honor society for two-year colleges): completion of a minimum of 12 credits at MHCC and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Membership is recorded on the student's transcript.

Transfer credit, including applicable military credits, must be officially evaluated before it can apply toward a degree. Once evaluated, it becomes part of the permanent academic record, but it does not factor into a student's MHCC GPA.
