Grade Notations Outside the GPA Scale
Beyond the letter grades A through F, West Virginia University's Undergraduate Catalog defines several notations that carry no numeric grade-point value and are excluded from the GPA calculation:
- I (Incomplete) — a temporary grade for unforeseen circumstances; if not resolved within the next regular term it is replaced with IF, which is then included in the GPA as an F.
- W (Withdrawal) — course withdrawal before the date specified in the University calendar; does not affect the GPA.
- P (Pass) — used in pass/fail grading; does not affect the GPA.
- CR (Credit) — credit awarded without a grade.
- X (Auditor) — no grade and no credit.
- PR (Progress) — a final grade is issued at the end of the second semester (Health Sciences Center only).
- S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) — an alternative grading option.
- H (Honors course, professional-school courses only).
- UF (Unforgivable F) — not eligible for the D/F Repeat Policy.
- FNA/FSA (Failure Never Attended / Failure Stopped Attending).
- NR (Not Reported) — an unresolved grade that must be settled before graduation.

How GPA Is Calculated
WVU computes an institutional GPA (all letter-graded work taken in the WVU system, excluding grades removed under the D/F Repeat Policy), a transfer GPA (all accepted domestic and international transfer work), and an overall GPA combining the two. Courses graded CR, H, PR, P, S, W, I, U, or X carry no grade-point value and are excluded from GPA calculations.
Under the D/F Repeat Policy, an undergraduate's first graded attempt at a course may be repeated: the original grade is disregarded for the institutional GPA and marked excluded (E) on the transcript, while the second grade is included in the institutional GPA and marked included (I). Grades of Unforgivable F (UF) are not eligible for this repeat policy.

GPA Requirement for Graduation
To be eligible to receive an undergraduate degree, a student must have an overall GPA of at least 2.0 at the time of graduation. Some degree or certificate programs require an overall GPA higher than 2.0.

Dean's List and President's List
Outstanding undergraduate achievement in a given term is recognized with President's List status (4.0 GPA) or Dean's List status (at least 3.5 GPA); only the higher honor is awarded and it is noted on the transcript. Students must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours of graded coursework with no grades of Incomplete or Not Reported; courses graded Pass, Satisfactory, or Auditor are excluded from the credit-hour count used for eligibility.

Transfer GPA
WVU computes a separate transfer GPA for all accepted domestic and international transfer coursework from properly accredited institutions. The overall GPA is calculated by combining the institutional and transfer GPAs, and the transfer GPA is used to decide eligibility for admission to the WVU system and to individual majors.
