Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) GPA Calculator

GPA is determined by dividing total grade points earned by total credits attempted; courses that do not generate grade points are not included in credits attempted.

• Semester GPA: grade points earned in courses attempted that semester, divided by credits attempted that semester.
• Cumulative GPA: includes all courses attempted, recomputed each semester as an ongoing record.
• Curriculum GPA: includes only courses applicable to a student's declared curriculum, used to check graduation requirements; when a course is repeated, only the highest grade counts toward it.
• GPA calculations include only grades earned at the student's home VCCS institution, unless an articulation agreement states otherwise.

Repeating a course: enrollment in the same course is limited to two attempts without written approval from the Dean of Students for a third; W, X, U, and I grades count as attempts. When a course is repeated, the highest grade earned is used in the cumulative GPA, though all attempts remain on the official transcript.

Academic renewal: students who return after a separation of three years or more may petition to have "D" and "F" grades earned before re-enrollment deleted from the cumulative and curriculum GPA, after earning at least a 2.0 GPA in the first twelve credit hours after re-enrollment; usable only once.

An average GPA between 1.50 and 1.99 may not by itself result in formal academic probation, but the catalog cautions that a minimum GPA of 2.00 in a student's curriculum is required for the receipt of an associate degree, diploma, or certificate.

A minimum cumulative/curriculum GPA of 2.00 is a prerequisite for receiving an associate degree, diploma, or certificate.

A one-credit Student Development (SDV) course is required for graduation in all degree programs and some certificate programs, generally within a student's first 15 credit hours; the requirement may be waived for students who already hold an associate or bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Students may be eligible for credit for prior learning -- previous studies, training, or work experience -- after evaluation by the Academic Advising Center; students must be officially enrolled in a curriculum to be eligible. BRCC applies a time limit on accepting credit for technical courses taken more than five years before admission to a program; the Registrar, in consultation with program faculty, decides whether older credit still applies, and credit-by-exam or credit for life experience may be offered instead.
