A-F and P/NP Grading Options at Portland State
Some Portland State courses can be taken under either grading option: the differentiated A-F option, or the undifferentiated Pass/No Pass (P/NP) option where the Class Schedule offers it. Students choosing P/NP must do so during pre-term registration or within the first seven weeks of the term, and cannot select it when repeating a course they previously received a differentiated grade in, or when their major or degree requires a letter grade.
Undergraduates are limited to 45 Pass credits toward their degree overall, with no more than 20 of those credits earned in the final 45 credits before graduation. The P/NP option is more limited at the graduate level.

What Counts Toward a Portland State GPA
Only differentiated A-F letter grades count toward GPA at Portland State; each plus adds 0.33 points and each minus subtracts 0.33 from the base letter's value (there is no A+). The marks P, NP, I, IP, W, AU, X, and M all carry no grade points and are excluded from GPA entirely.
A Pass (P) grade is equivalent to a C- or better in undergraduate courses, or a B- or better in graduate courses, though some departments may set a different threshold. GPA is calculated separately for undergraduate and graduate coursework, and the result is truncated to two decimal places rather than rounded.
