East Los Angeles College (ELAC) GPA Calculator

Only the evaluative letter grades (A, B, C, D, F) carry grade points and are averaged into the GPA. "P" (Pass) and "NP" (No-Pass) grades earn unit credit but are explicitly excluded from GPA calculation, as is "SP" (Satisfactory Progress, noncredit courses only). Non-evaluative symbols — "I" (Incomplete), "IP" (In Progress), "RD" (Report Delayed), "W" (Withdrawal), "MW" (Military Withdrawal), and "EW" (Excused Withdrawal) — are also never used in calculating units attempted or grade points.

When a student repeats a course to alleviate a substandard grade (D, F, or NP), the previous grade and credit are disregarded in the GPA computation and the highest grade earned is used instead. A given course may be repeated this way up to two times; a third repetition requires approval from the College President or designee.

A student who has attempted at least 12 semester units in the Los Angeles Community College District is placed on academic probation if their cumulative GPA falls below 2.0. A student who has enrolled in at least 12 semester units is placed on progress probation if they receive "W," "I," or "NP" symbols in 50% or more of their units.

A student on academic probation is subject to dismissal after earning a cumulative GPA below 2.0 in each of three consecutive semesters (a single semester GPA of 2.0 or higher keeps the student off dismissal). A student on progress probation is subject to dismissal if W/I/NC/NP symbols reach or exceed 50% of enrolled units across three consecutive semesters. A student is removed from academic probation once their cumulative GPA reaches 2.0 or higher, including through academic renewal. Dismissal from any one LACCD college disqualifies a student from admission to any other LACCD college.

A cumulative GPA of 2.0 ("C") or better in all degree-applicable coursework is required to earn a Local Associate Degree or an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) — for the ADT, specifically in all CSU-transferable coursework the degree is based on. This includes external (transfer) coursework only to the extent it is applied to satisfy a degree requirement (major, general education, or elective).

The Dean's Honor List requires a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher — full-time students need 12 or more graded units completed in the qualifying semester; part-time students need 12 or more cumulative graded units completed in the LACCD. Students who appear on the Dean's Honor List for three or more consecutive semesters are placed on the President's Honor List.

Graduation honors, based on cumulative GPA for all college coursework attempted and requiring all degree-applicable coursework to have been taken at LACCD colleges, are: Summa Cum Laude (GPA 3.9+, minimum 24 units completed), Magna Cum Laude (GPA 3.7+), and Cum Laude (GPA 3.5+).
