Grade Symbols Not Counted in GPA
Several transcript symbols do not carry grade points and are excluded from grade point average calculations:
- I — Incomplete, for satisfactory progress interrupted by non-academic circumstances; must be resolved within 12 months or converts to F.
- W — Withdrawal without penalty, permitted before the official mid-term withdrawal date.
- V — Audit.
- K — Credit earned through an approved examination program.
- NR — Grade not reported by the instructor at grade-processing time.
- WM — Withdrawal without penalty under Board of Regents policy for military service.
- S / U — Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory, for courses graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis.
A grade of WF (Withdrawn Failing) is assigned when a student withdraws from part of their schedule after midterm without an approved hardship exception, and is counted in the GPA at the same numerical value as F.

Repeat Courses and GPA Computation
Grade point average is computed by dividing total quality points earned by total credit hours attempted in courses graded A, B, C, D, F, or WF; quality points equal the numerical grade equivalent multiplied by credit hours. Courses numbered below 1000 are not included in the computation of a student's grade point average.
Effective fall 2024, a student who repeats a course has the cumulative GPA calculated using the highest grade attained among all attempts; grades from the other attempts remain on the official transcript but are excluded from the GPA.
Students receiving Federal Financial Aid should note that federal regulations allow only one repeat attempt per course for aid purposes, and financial aid rules require both attempts to count as attempted courses even though GPA forgiveness applies; financial aid cannot use grade forgiveness by regulation.
