GPA Calculation

Grade point average is computed on courses undertaken at the University of California, except courses taken through University Extension. Grades A, B, C, D and F carry grade points and are used in the calculation; grades I, IP, P, S, NP and U carry no grade points and are excluded from all grade point computations. GPA is calculated by dividing accumulated grade points earned by accumulated units undertaken.

Undergraduate students in good standing enrolled in at least 12 units may take up to one course per term on a Passed/Not Passed (P/NP) basis (two if P/NP was not elected the preceding term). A grade of C- or better is recorded as P; D+ or below is recorded as NP. P/NP coursework is capped at one-third of total units taken and passed at UC Merced.

Graduate students may be assigned Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) grades in specific courses; S is awarded for work that would otherwise receive B or better. Neither S nor U carries grade points.

Mid-semester grades, reported for lower-division courses at the end of the eighth week, are notational only and are not recorded on the transcript or counted toward GPA.

Credit Toward Degree Requirements

Undergraduate: courses graded A, B, C, D or P count toward degree requirements; F or NP do not. Grades of I or IP are not counted until replaced by a qualifying grade.

Graduate: courses graded A, B or S count toward degree requirements; C, D, F or U do not. Grades of I or IP are not counted until replaced by A, B or S.

For graduate students, an unresolved Incomplete (I) is treated as F when determining whether the minimum 3.0 GPA required for graduation has been met.

Dean's and Chancellor's Honors

Undergraduate students are eligible for the Dean's Honor List in a semester with at least 12 graded units and a 3.5 GPA or better, with no grade of I or NP; an academic-integrity violation during the year disqualifies a student for that year. Dean's Honors are listed on the transcript.

A student placed on the Dean's Honor List for both the fall and spring semesters of a single academic year is placed on the Chancellor's Honor List for that year.
