How Your GPA Is Calculated

Your cumulative grade point average is calculated by dividing the total quality points earned by the total semester credit hours attempted (including both passed and failed courses). Quality points for a course equal the letter grade's point value multiplied by the credit hours attempted for that course.

Courses may be repeated to improve your GPA. Only the highest grade earned counts toward your cumulative GPA, though all attempts remain on your transcript. A course may be repeated up to three times within a five-year period (four attempts total, including the original).

Academic Alert, Probation, and Suspension

A cumulative GPA below 2.00 after any semester places a student on Academic Alert; a second consecutive semester below 2.00 results in Academic Probation; a third consecutive semester below 2.00 results in Academic Suspension for one semester, with an appeal process available.

Academic Forgiveness allows a student who has experienced academic difficulty (a cumulative GPA below 2.00) to have all "D" and "F" grades earned before their eligibility date excluded from the cumulative GPA, one time only, after meeting eligibility criteria including at least a 2.00 GPA in 12 semester hours in a new major.

GPA Requirements for Graduation

A 2.00 cumulative grade point average is required for graduation. At least 25 percent of the semester credit hours required for a degree, diploma, or certificate (the residency requirement) must be completed at Gaston College, with grades of "D" or higher ("B" or "C" or higher for designated programs).

Graduates with a cumulative GPA of 3.80 or above earn a degree or diploma with high honors (gold honor cords); those with a GPA of 3.50 up to 3.80 earn honors (burgundy honor cords).

Semester Honor Rolls

The President's List recognizes students who earn a 4.00 GPA on 12 or more semester hours in a given semester, with no Incompletes recorded. The Dean's List recognizes students who earn a 3.50-3.99 GPA on 12 or more semester hours. The Honor's List recognizes part-time students who earn a 3.50 or higher GPA on 6 to 11 semester hours. Continuing education (CE) credits do not count toward these hour totals.

Transfer Credit and Your GPA

Credit accepted in transfer (grades "TR," "TA," "TB," "TC," and "TD") does not affect a student's cumulative grade point average and is not used in determining eligibility to graduate with academic honors.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at Gaston College?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at Gaston College?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Gaston College GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
Does a Pass (P) grade in a developmental course affect my GPA at Gaston College?

No. Pass grades, used for developmental courses including ACA 111 and MAT 001, are excluded from the calculation of the cumulative grade point average.
