Midlands Technical College (MTC) GPA Calculator

Several notations beyond the standard A–F letters appear on Midlands Technical College transcripts. Two carry an explicit zero grade-point value and count toward the cumulative GPA: WF (Withdraw Failing) and FN (Failure Non Participation, assigned when a student stops attending without officially withdrawing). The rest carry no grade points and are excluded from GPA calculations: W (Withdrew), I (Incomplete, must be resolved within one term), AU (Audit, no credit), E (Exempted from the Course, earns credit hours only), TR (Transfer, earns credit hours only), NC (No Credit), and S/U (Successful/Unsuccessful).

Grades of A, B, C, D and F earned in Developmental Studies zero-level courses (e.g., ENG 032) and in Continuing Education courses are not calculated into a student's overall GPA.

When a course is repeated, every attempt is recorded on the permanent academic record. For 100- and 200-level courses, only the higher of the two grades counts toward the GPA. A withdrawal grade of W counts as an attempt. Students are generally allowed two attempts at a course; a third requires departmental review and approval, and further attempts are automatically blocked absent an exception (individual departments may set stricter limits). A receiving institution may recalculate the GPA, including repeated coursework, under its own transfer policies, and financial-aid Satisfactory Academic Progress review counts all attempted coursework regardless of this repeat policy.

To remain in good standing, degree-, diploma- or certificate-seeking students in regular curriculum classes must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 (some programs require higher). Falling below 2.0 places a student on probation for the next enrolled term; reaching 2.0 that term removes probation, while remaining below 2.0 cumulatively can extend probation for up to two further terms before suspension is required for one semester. Students on probation may not hold college-wide elective office or serve on administrative or social committees.

Students enrolled only in zero-level developmental courses follow a parallel track: they must earn grades of A, B or C in at least half their courses each term to remain in good standing, with the same probation-then-suspension progression for falling short.

To receive a degree, diploma or certificate, students must satisfactorily complete all general-education and major requirements, all program and residency credit hours, and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all academic coursework (some programs require higher GPAs in specific courses), and must fulfill all financial obligations to the college. A graduation application must be filed by the term's published deadline; students who meet all requirements without applying are administratively graduated.

Each term, students earning a 4.0 GPA in at least 12 credit hours (excluding zero-level courses) are named to the President's List; those earning a 3.5–3.99 GPA in at least 12 such hours are named to the Dean's List; and part-time students earning at least a 3.8 GPA in 3–11 such hours are named to the Part-Time Student Honor Roll.

Associate-degree students with at least 12 college-level credit hours and a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher may be nominated to Phi Theta Kappa (MTC's Alpha Eta Kappa chapter); Career Program students with 12 semester hours and a 3.0 GPA may seek faculty recommendation for the National Technical Honor Society.

Midlands Technical College works with other colleges and universities to facilitate transfer of credit both into and out of MTC, though the receiving institution always makes the final transfer decision; articulation agreements guide transferability for the Associate in Arts, Associate in Science and several other majors. Students transferring into MTC must have official transcripts sent directly from prior institutions (or via Parchment or the National Student Clearinghouse) at least three weeks before the application deadline. Transfer coursework is recorded as a TR grade, which earns credit hours but generates no grade points and is not calculated into the GPA.
