Undergraduate students who receive a grade of D+ or lower in a Brooklyn College course and retake that course at Brooklyn College, earning a grade of C- or higher, may have the original grade deleted from the GPA calculation and replaced by the new grade. The original grade remains on the transcript with a note indicating it is excluded from the GPA computation; this does not apply where the low grade resulted from an academic integrity violation.

The credits eligible for this replacement are capped at 16 total across a student's undergraduate career at any CUNY institution, and a grade cannot be partially deleted — a student who has used 14 of the 16 credits may only replace a two-credit course.

When a student repeats a course after earning a grade of C- or higher the first time, no credit is given for the repetition. Outside the D+-or-lower replacement policy, Brooklyn College does not compute the grade received for a repeated course (passing, F, FIN, or WF) into the cumulative GPA.

Academic standing is reviewed at the end of each semester. Students whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.00 are placed on academic probation (with a minimum of 18 index credits) and are subject to dismissal from the college.

Students on academic probation may remain on probation for up to three successive semesters and must earn at least a 2.00 GPA each semester while on probation, working to restore their cumulative GPA to 2.00. Failure to maintain satisfactory progress during the probationary period results in dismissal.

Students dismissed for unsatisfactory academic progress may petition for reinstatement. Following reinstatement, students remain on academic probation until they earn a cumulative GPA of 2.00, and are subject to final academic dismissal if they fail to meet the requirements for removal from probation.

Brooklyn College requires 120 credits and a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher for a baccalaureate degree.

A student who has earned at least 150 credits but does not have a 2.00 GPA or higher on the entire Brooklyn College record may instead present 120 credits from courses in which a minimum grade of C was earned; these 120 credits must include all college requirements, and any required course completed with a grade lower than C under this option must be repeated.

Brooklyn College grants two honors designations at graduation: honors for general excellence and honors for excellence in advanced study within a department. For general excellence, a degree summa cum laude requires a GPA of at least 3.90; magna cum laude requires 3.75 up to 3.90; cum laude requires 3.50 up to 3.75. Students must have completed at least 60 credits of traditional letter grades at Brooklyn College to be eligible, and the honors GPA is computed only on grades earned at Brooklyn College.

Members of the William E. Macaulay Honors College (University Scholars) and the Scholars Program must achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher by the end of their first year and 3.50 or higher by the end of their sophomore year, maintained until graduation.

Transfer students with fewer than 12 completed credits must meet freshman admission criteria and have a cumulative GPA of 2.22 or better; those with at least 12 credits are considered for admission with a 2.22 or better cumulative GPA. Students transferring with an A.A. or A.S. from a CUNY community college, or holding a prior bachelor's degree, are considered for admission with a 2.00 or better GPA.

All courses taken for credit at an undergraduate CUNY college with a passing grade of D- or higher are accepted for credit at Brooklyn College, regardless of whether a direct course equivalency exists. Credits from non-CUNY institutions accredited by a regional accrediting commission or the New York State Board of Regents are granted for credit-bearing courses completed with a grade of C- or higher in disciplines offered at Brooklyn College.
