Grade Notations
Beyond the standard letter grades, Loyola's catalog defines several non-graded notations. A grade of "I" (Incomplete) is temporary; if not replaced with a permanent grade within six weeks of the following semester, it converts automatically to "F". A grade of "W" indicates official withdrawal during the allowed period and is not counted as attempted or earned hours, nor computed in the GPA. A grade of "WE" (Emergency Withdrawal, effective Fall 2022) does not count toward attempted hours or GPA. "WF" (discontinued Fall 2022) indicated unauthorized withdrawal and, while it was in use, was counted as attempted hours and calculated as an "F" (0 credit points) in the GPA. "NR" is assigned when a student never attended or completed any work in a registered course and does not impact attempted hours or GPA.

How GPA Is Calculated
The term GPA is determined by dividing total quality points (credit points multiplied by credit hours) by total attempted graded credit hours. Grade point averages are not rounded — for example, 3.490 is not rounded to 3.50. Courses taken under the Pass/No Pass option are not counted in computing academic averages: a grade of "P" carries no computed GPA value, and a student earning D+ or lower under this option receives "NP", which likewise is not computed into the GPA.

Academic Standing and Probation
Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to remain in good academic standing. Any undergraduate student who falls below a 2.0 cumulative GPA is placed on academic probation and must earn a minimum term GPA of 2.3 in each subsequent term of enrollment until the cumulative 2.0 is restored; a student may be limited to 15 credit hours per term while on probation. A student on probation for at least two consecutive terms who has not achieved a cumulative 2.0 GPA may be dismissed for insufficient academic performance.

Graduation GPA Requirement
Graduation requires completion of 120 credit hours with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 for all coursework attempted, and at least a 2.00 GPA in the student's major.

Transfer Credit and GPA
Grades earned at another college or an unaffiliated program are not computed into Loyola's term or cumulative grade point average. Transfer credit counts toward the number of hours required for graduation but is not reflected in the cumulative GPA shown on grade reports.
