Western Carolina University (WCU) GPA Calculator

Beyond the standard A+–F quality-point scale, WCU uses several non-point grade codes: I (Incomplete) must be resolved by the last day of classes of the next regular semester or it becomes an F; IP (In Progress) applies only to courses approved for IP grading; S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) is used only in courses approved for S/U grading and is never calculated into the GPA; AU (Audit) earns no credit and does not affect the GPA.

Students may withdraw from a maximum of 16 hours of courses with a grade of W (Withdrawal, no GPA effect) during their WCU career; any withdrawal beyond that limit results in a WF (Withdrew/Failing), which affects the term and cumulative GPA as if it were an F.

GPA is the weighted average of WCU course grades, calculated from quality points earned divided by quality hours attempted. Grades that carry no quality points (I, IP, S, U, W, AU, NC) are not included in the GPA, and transfer credits are never included in the GPA.

When a course is repeated through the Grade Replacement process, only the most recent grade is calculated into the GPA — though total attempted hours still increase with each repeat.

Academic Standing is assessed at the end of each Fall, Spring, and Summer term using both cumulative GPA and cumulative completion rate. Good Academic Standing requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.000 and a cumulative completion rate of at least 66.66%.

Students who fall short can continue enrolling under Academic Warning, an Academic Progress Agreement, or Academic Recovery, each requiring either a 2.000 cumulative GPA or a 2.300 term GPA (plus the completion-rate equivalent) to continue. A new student earning below a 1.000 GPA in their first regular term, or failure to meet continued-enrollment requirements, results in Academic Suspension (one regular term's ineligibility); failure after Academic Recovery results in Academic Dismissal (two years' ineligibility). Both may be appealed to the Academic Appeals Board.

Honors GPA is computed only on coursework completed at Western Carolina University. The Dean's List requires a term GPA of 3.50 or higher (excluding remedial courses, no grade of D+, D, D-, F, or I); the Chancellor's List requires 3.80 or higher under the same conditions.

Graduation honors require a minimum GPA on quality hours attempted at WCU: 3.50 for cum laude, 3.70 for magna cum laude, and 3.90 for summa cum laude. Students who complete their entire undergraduate career at WCU with a 4.00 GPA are designated University Scholars.
