Black Hills State University (BHSU) GPA Calculator

BHSU grades undergraduate courses on a 4.0 scale with five letter grades: A (4.0), B (3.0), C (2.0), D (1.0), and F (0.0). Plus and minus grades are not used anywhere in the system.

A WFL notation (Withdrawal, 7th course or higher) is also computed into your GPA at 0.0 grade points, the same as an F — it is assigned automatically once you exceed six W/WD withdrawals during your undergraduate career.

Several other marks appear on a transcript but carry no grade points and are not computed in your GPA, including S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory), I (Incomplete), IP (In Progress), AU (Audit), CR (Credit), and W/WD/WW (ordinary withdrawals).

BHSU calculates several GPAs each term: your Institutional GPA (credits earned at BHSU itself), your System Term GPA (credits earned across any South Dakota Regental university in a term), your Transfer GPA, and your Cumulative GPA (all credits combined).

If you repeat a course, only your last grade earned counts toward your cumulative GPA. You're allowed up to three attempts at an undergraduate course before needing to petition the Vice President of Academic Affairs for an exception — only the final attempt counts toward graduation and your GPA. Auditing (AU) is the only grade that does not count as a retake attempt.

You're in Good Academic Standing at or above a 2.0 cumulative GPA. If your cumulative GPA falls below the required standard, you're placed on Academic Probation for the following term(s) until you meet or exceed it again.

If you fail to bring your term and cumulative GPA up to standard while on probation, you're placed on Academic Suspension for a minimum of two academic terms and cannot enroll at any South Dakota Regental university without an approved appeal.

Most degrees require a 2.0 minimum institutional and cumulative GPA. Teaching degrees require a higher bar: a 2.7 minimum cumulative GPA, a 2.0 minimum institutional GPA, and a 2.7 minimum GPA across your combined major-content and education courses.

Undergraduate honors designations require both your cumulative and institutional GPA to reach the threshold, plus a minimum of 60 credit hours completed at BHSU: Summa Cum Laude (3.9 or above), Magna Cum Laude (3.7 to 3.89), and Cum Laude (3.5 to 3.69).

Transfer credit from a junior, community, or two-year technical college cannot exceed half of the total hours required for your baccalaureate degree at BHSU.
