Genesee grades on a 4.0 scale with plus/minus letter grades from A through F. There is no A+ — A itself, at 4.00, is the top of the scale.

Several other marks appear on transcripts but carry no grade points and are not counted in the GPA: H (Honors level course), J (not yet graded), S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, used only in non-credit courses), CP/CF (Clinical Passed/Failed, explicitly no quality points), W (Withdrawal), IP (In process — converts automatically to F if not resolved by the twelfth week of the following semester), CR (Credit earned by examination), AU (Audit), and TR (Credit transferred from another institution).

Students may repeat a course for which credit was received with a grade of A- or lower; a course already passed with an A cannot be repeated. When a course is repeated, only the higher of the two grades is used to compute the cumulative GPA, though both grades remain on the transcript. No course may be repeated solely to increase earned credit hours where the credit-hour value has changed, and a repeated course counts only once toward graduation requirements and total hours earned.

Students are in Good Academic Standing during their first eleven (11) attempted credit hours regardless of GPA. Effective the term in which a student registers for their twelfth credit hour, a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 is required to remain in Good Academic Standing.

Students who fall short for the first time are placed on Academic Warning and must raise their cumulative GPA to 2.0 or better. A second or subsequent shortfall results in Academic Probation (registration limited to 14 credits) and, if a term GPA of 2.0 is still not reached, Academic Restriction (registration limited to 7 credits, with a registration hold until an academic-improvement plan is developed with an advisor or success coach).

A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher is required to graduate or receive a post-secondary credential from Genesee Community College; this GPA requirement is listed for every degree and certificate program in the catalog.

Each fall and spring semester the College recognizes students with strong term GPAs, all requiring no grades of C- or lower, IP, or U:

• President's List — full-time students, term GPA of at least 3.75, 12 or more credit hours.
• Provost's List — part-time students, term GPA of at least 3.75, 6 to 11 credit hours.
• Dean's List — full- and part-time students, term GPA of at least 3.50, 6 or more credit hours.

The Honors Program typically admits students with a high school average of 85 or higher, or a GPA of 3.25 or better across 12 credit hours at an accredited institution of higher education, and/or Honors Committee approval.
