How grading works at NYU
NYU uses a letter-grade system on a scale from 4.000 (an A) down to 0.000 (an F) — see the Grade Scale Reference above for the exact grade points for every letter. NYU's own grading policy describes this list as exhaustive, and NYU does not award an A+: A is the highest grade on the scale.
NYU's grade-point values changed starting Fall 2018. If you were graded before Fall 2018, your plus/minus grades (A-, B+, B-, C+, C-, D+) were recorded under a slightly different set of quality points than the ones used today — only your current, post-2018 transcript entries use the values shown in the calculator.
A specific letter grade may not be used by every NYU school or division — which grades a program awards varies, but a letter's value does not vary between NYU's schools (with the sole exception of the School of Law, which runs its own separate grading system for JD/LLM students).

How NYU calculates your GPA
Your GPA is a weighted average: it's the total number of quality points you've earned divided by the total number of quality credit hours you've completed.
For example, a student who completes 8 credits of A, 4 credits of B, and 4 credits of C work earns 32 + 12 + 8 = 52 quality points over 16 quality credit hours, for a GPA of 52 ÷ 16 = 3.250.
Courses graded Pass, Withdrawn, or Incomplete are not averaged into your GPA at all — they simply don't carry a grade-point value, so they neither help nor hurt your GPA.
If a grade for a course isn't submitted within 30 days of the end of the semester or term, an NR (No Record) grade is recorded on your transcript instead. NR counts as an attempted credit for financial-aid academic-progress purposes, but it does not count toward earned credit and does not factor into your GPA. You can't graduate with an NR on your record unless your academic dean formally approves an exception.

Does an Incomplete (I) or Withdrawal (W) affect my GPA at NYU?
