How the Grade Point Average Is Calculated

The cumulative grade point average (GPA) is computed by dividing the total grade points earned by the total units attempted (grade points ÷ units attempted = GPA). Only grades that carry a grade-point value and are counted in units attempted affect the GPA.

The FW (“Failing”) symbol, assigned when a student stops participating in a class sometime after the withdrawal deadline, is treated the same as F for GPA purposes. Units for which a W, MW, P, NP, or I was assigned are not counted in units attempted and so do not affect the GPA.

Course Repetition and Academic Renewal

Students may petition to repeat a course to alleviate substandard academic work (a grade of D, F, FW, NP, or NC) or a W, with a maximum of two repeats permitted (three total attempts).

Up to two semesters or 24 units of poor grades (D, F, FW, or NP) earned within the Peralta Community College District may be forgiven from the cumulative GPA through an Academic Renewal petition, provided at least one year has elapsed since the grades were earned and the student has since completed at least 15 semester units with a GPA of 2.5 or better.

Academic and Progress Probation, Dismissal

Good academic standing requires a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. A student who has attempted at least 12 semester units and has a cumulative GPA below 2.0 district-wide is placed on Academic Probation. A student who has attempted at least 12 semester units is placed on Progress Probation when the percentage of W, I, and NP grades reaches at least 50% of all grades recorded.

A student on academic probation is subject to dismissal after three consecutive semesters (summer included) with a cumulative GPA below 1.75. A student on progress probation is subject to dismissal after three consecutive semesters in which W, I, and NP entries reach or exceed 50% of units taken. A dismissed student must remain out of the college for one semester.

Associate Degree GPA Requirement

The associate degree requires at least 60 degree-applicable units (at least 21 in general education, at least 21 in the major, and at least 12 completed at Laney College), plus a minimum 2.0 grade-point average in each of: the overall GPA and the general education requirements. A grade of C or better is separately required in English Composition (Area 1a), Mathematics (Area 2), and each course in the major.

Honor Roll and Graduation Honors

Students who complete 12 or more units with a semester GPA of 3.25 or better are placed on the Honor Roll (computed district-wide).

Associate degree graduates with a cumulative GPA of 3.25-3.49 earn “With Honors” (Cum Laude); 3.50-3.74 earns “With High Honors” (Magna Cum Laude); 3.75-4.0 earns “With Highest Honors” (Summa Cum Laude). Honor-status GPA excludes non-associate-degree and noncredit courses and lower-division units earned outside the Peralta District. Students graduating with a 4.0 GPA are considered for valedictorian/salutatorian.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at Laney College?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at Laney College?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Laney College GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
