Hartnell College GPA Calculator

Hartnell grades on a plain letter scale: A, B, C, D and F — there is no A+ and no plus/minus grading of any kind. The discipline offering each course determines whether it is graded on the standard letter-grade basis, on a Pass/No Pass basis, or gives students a choice between the two; the grading basis used is published in the Catalog and Schedule of Classes.

Alongside the five evaluative letter grades, Hartnell also awards P (Pass), NP (No Pass), and SP (Satisfactory Progress, noncredit courses only) as evaluative symbols, plus a set of non-evaluative symbols — I (Incomplete), RD (Report Delayed), W (Withdrawal), EW (Excused Withdrawal), and MW (Military Withdrawal) — that record what happened in a course without contributing grade points.

Only grades of A, B, C, D, and F count toward your GPA at Hartnell. The highest grade earns four points and the lowest earns zero; your GPA is total grade points divided by total units attempted.

P, I, W, IP, and NP are not included in your total units attempted and do not affect your GPA at all — even though a course graded P still counts toward the 60 units required for graduation. Non-evaluative symbols (I, RD, W, EW, MW) likewise carry no grade points.

You'll be placed on academic probation if you've attempted at least 12 semester units and your GPA is below 2.0. You come off academic probation once your accumulated GPA reaches 2.0 or higher.

You'll be placed on progress probation if you've enrolled in at least 12 semester units and 50% or more of them carry a W, I, NC, or NP entry; you come off once that percentage drops below 50%.

Dismissal follows if either condition persists for three consecutive semesters. A student on academic probation who earns a semester GPA of 2.00 or better is not dismissed as long as that minimum is maintained each semester. Students may appeal a proposed dismissal or petition for readmission after being dismissed.

Full-time students (12 or more units of letter-grade work per semester) earning a semester GPA of 3.5 to 4.0 are placed on the President's Honor Roll. Those earning a semester GPA of 3.0 to 3.49 are placed on the Dean's List.

Hartnell accepts coursework from institutions accredited by any of the six regional accrediting agencies (or listed as a candidate for accreditation in the U.S. Department of Education's Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs) toward its Associate Degree and certificate programs.

Course equivalency is established through direct articulation with the sending institution, indirect articulation via the California Course Identification Numbering System (C-ID) or the statewide ASSIST.org repository, or a critical evaluation of course content by counseling/evaluations staff. Elective-unit requirements may be met by coursework from any regionally accredited college or university without further evaluation; program and general-education requirements require the equivalency or substitution process above. Upper-division coursework from a regionally accredited institution is accepted for subject credit only — no units are awarded for it.
