How the GPA is calculated
The cumulative GPA is the total grade points earned divided by the total credits taken at Western Iowa Tech Community College; grades that do not carry points (I, P, Q/NP, W, N, AW, O, T, L, X) are excluded from the GPA. The semester GPA is calculated the same way using only that semester's grades.
If a course is repeated, both attempts appear on the transcript, but only the latest grade is computed in the cumulative GPA.
Academic renewal allows a one-time removal of one or two semesters' grades from the cumulative GPA, requiring 12 completed semester credit hours with a minimum GPA of 3.00, or 24 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 2.50, in the term(s) following the renewal period. Renewed courses remain on the transcript marked "O" and are excluded from both the GPA and graduation credit.
An Incomplete ("I") must be resolved by the instructor's due date, which may not exceed the end of the next regular semester; if not resolved, it converts to an "F."

Honors and scholastic recognition
Scholastic recognition is awarded per semester to students completing 12 or more graded semester credits: the President's List requires a 4.0000 GPA, and the WITCC Scholar List requires a 3.5000-3.9999 GPA.
Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher receive special recognition at commencement ceremonies and it is noted on the official transcript.
The WITCC Honors Program awards Honors ("H") recognition on the transcript and at graduation to students who complete an honors project and earn a grade of "A" in the course.
Phi Theta Kappa membership requires an associate degree program, 12 or more earned credit hours, and a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Transfer credit and GPA
Transfer credit from other federally recognized, regionally accredited institutions requires a grade of "C" or better; courses or credits over seven years old may not apply, at the academic program's discretion.
A grade of "D" will rarely transfer if earned in a student's major, and in some cases will not transfer under any circumstance; final acceptance decisions rest with the receiving institution.
