Grade point average is computed by dividing total grade points earned by total units attempted. A handful of symbols are never counted in this calculation: P, NP, W, EW (Excused Withdrawal), MW (Military Withdrawal), I (Incomplete), IP (In Progress), and RD (Report Delayed) are all excluded from GPA math, even though W, NP, and I are still used to determine progress-alert and disqualification status.

Academic renewal lets a student petition to exclude substandard coursework (D, F, or NP grades only) from their GPA calculation once at least one year has passed and the student has since achieved a 2.5 GPA in 12 units or a 2.0 GPA in 18 units. Up to 30 semester units of D/F work can be alleviated this way; the courses stay on the transcript but drop out of the GPA computation.

A course with a substandard final grade (D, F, or NP) may generally be repeated, and when it is, only the last grade earned counts toward GPA — the earlier attempt is annotated and removed from the cumulative GPA total, though it remains visible on the transcript.

A student who has attempted at least 12 semester units and whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 is placed on academic probation; a student is removed from probation once the cumulative GPA climbs back to 2.0. A separate lack-of-progress probation applies when 50% or more of a student's cumulative units are W, I, or NP.

A student already on academic probation is academically dismissed if their semester GPA also falls below 2.0; a student on lack-of-progress probation is dismissed if 50% or more of that semester's units are again W, I, or NP.

Students carrying 12 or more units in which letter grades are earned (Pass grades don't count toward the total) and maintaining a 3.5 or higher GPA are placed on the Vice President's List; a 4.0 GPA earns a place on the President's List. Part-time students can qualify for the Vice President's List by completing 12 units across an academic year (fall and spring combined) at a 3.5 GPA or higher. Students who earn a 3.5 or higher GPA on all degree-applicable work attempted graduate with honors.
