SUNY Jamestown Community College uses a letter-grade scale with quality points for the grades A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, D, and F. Several other grades carry no quality points and are not counted in the calculation of grade point average: I (Incomplete), CR (Credit), W (Withdrawal), X (Administrative Withdrawal), AU (Audit), SA (Special Audit), SW (Special Audit Withdrawal), and SX (Special Audit Administrative Withdrawal).

GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the number of credit hours undertaken in courses for which a letter grade has been assigned. Courses graded CR, I, AU, W, X, SA, SW, or SX earn neither credit hours nor quality points toward the GPA.

When a student repeats a course to raise their grade and average, the highest grade earned is used in the GPA computation; only one instance of that course's credit hours counts toward total hours and GPA for graduation.

Students who fall below the minimum standards on the Federal Aid Eligibility Chart A are placed in Academic Recovery status, then Academic Jeopardy status if the shortfall continues for two or more semesters, and may face Academic Suspension if it continues further. Students suspended from the college may reapply after one full semester; those readmitted return in Academic Jeopardy status until they again meet Chart A standards.

Graduation from JCC requires 60 semester credit hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or better.

Full-time students who earn a GPA of 3.5 or better in 12 or more credit hours (not counting imputed credits) during a semester are named to the Dean's List; part-time students with a 3.5 GPA or better in 6-11 credit hours are named to the part-time student Dean's List. CR and imputed credits are excluded from these calculations.

At commencement, graduates with 60 or more credits earned at JCC may achieve highest honors (4.0 GPA), high honors (3.5-3.99 GPA), or honors (3.25-3.49 GPA) in all JCC coursework, noted on their transcripts.

Nomination to Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year colleges, requires a GPA of at least 3.5 and completion of at least 12 degree-applicable credit hours that contribute to the student's GPA.

JCC has signed transfer articulation agreements with numerous four-year colleges and universities, identifying which JCC courses meet degree requirements at the transfer institution. Most agreements guarantee acceptance of JCC students who meet the specified requirements and junior status at the transfer school; several are dual admission agreements admitting a student to both JCC and a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral program simultaneously.

Most four-year schools require a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for transfer, and some require higher; students should confirm requirements with their intended transfer institution(s).
