The alphanumeric grade equivalencies apply to final course grades only. A D- grade may be assigned to individual assignments or exams, but the college does not permit its use as a final course grade. Departments or programs with external accreditation criteria, and individual instructors, may publish department-, program-, or course-specific grading guidelines that depart from the college-wide table, provided the departure is published in the course syllabus and distributed to students at the start of the semester.

Students may repeat a course in which they earned F, W, R, NC, WN, or WU. If a student repeats a course originally failed with F or WU and subsequently earns a C or better in the same course, the original failing grade remains on the transcript but is no longer computed into the GPA (up to a total of 16 excluded failing credits across CUNY enrollment). A course with a grade of C- or below may be repeated only if a more advanced course in that discipline has not yet been completed; a grade of C or better may not be repeated. These repeat rules do not apply to the EMS-Paramedic, Nursing, Physical Therapist Assistant, Polysomnographic Technology, or Surgical Technology programs, which have their own grade regulations.

Students who have been away from Kingsborough for three or more years and whose GPA was below 2.00 may be readmitted in good academic standing under a one-time grade forgiveness policy: prior failing grades remain on the transcript but are excluded from the GPA used to determine standing.

Effective beginning Spring 2022, a student's cumulative GPA must meet the following minimum, based on attempted credits (including equated developmental credits), to remain in good academic standing:

Students below the minimum are placed on academic probation for one term. If the deficiency continues after a second term, students may be subject to academic dismissal and must wait at least three years before reapplying; dismissed students may appeal for reinstatement to the College Committee on Admission and Academic Standing. Students who fail to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) are placed on financial aid suspension until SAP requirements are met.

To earn an associate degree or certificate, a student must complete a minimum of 60 credits (some programs require more), maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00, complete at least 30 credits in residency at Kingsborough, and be matriculated during the final term of attendance. Some departments also require a minimum GPA for specific major courses.

To qualify for the Dean's List in a given term, a student must earn 12 or more credits (not including developmental courses), achieve a term GPA of 3.50 or higher, have no grades of D, F, FIN, INC, R, or WU at the time the list is produced, and be in good academic standing. Qualifying students are placed on the Dean's List automatically; it becomes part of the permanent record and appears on the transcript. Students on the Dean's List for their first two semesters who enroll full-time for a third semester are eligible for a Dean's List Scholarship of $300, awarded to up to 60 students per year by cumulative GPA ranking; transfer students and WAVE scholarship recipients are not eligible.

Credit is awarded for courses from a regionally accredited non-CUNY college in which the grade earned was C or better (or an equivalent pass/satisfactory grade); all passing grades transfer from other CUNY colleges. Transfer courses are awarded credit with no grade value (quality points) assigned, and transfer credits are not counted toward the GPA, though they do count toward attempted and completed credits. A maximum of 30 credits (45 for the fully online Liberal Arts program) may be accepted toward degree completion through the combined options of testing and course transfer.
