How grading works at the University of Rochester
The University of Rochester uses a full plus/minus letter-grading scale for undergraduates, running from A down through D- before reaching E (failure). The Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences does not award the D+ or D- grades that the rest of the university's undergraduate colleges use.
Two separate failing grades exist: E is a regular faculty-assigned failure that counts toward the GPA, while XE denotes failure due to academic dishonesty and carries the same zero grade-point value as E.

How your GPA is calculated at Rochester
Your cumulative grade point average — the “point-hour ratio” — is calculated by dividing the total number of grade points you've earned by the total number of hours for which you've received a final grade, whether passing or failing. Transfer credits, AP credits, and credits earned with a grade of CR are excluded from this calculation.
Grades of S (Satisfactory), F (Failure under the satisfactory/fail option), and P (Pass) do not affect your GPA ratio at all.

Academic probation and separation at Rochester
You're placed on academic probation if your cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, if your GPA for the most recent semester falls below 2.0, or — once you've been accepted into a major, which must happen before you reach junior standing — if your GPA in the courses counted toward that major falls below 2.0. Continuing to fail these standards makes you eligible for separation from the University.

Dean's List and graduation honors at Rochester
Dean's List recognition requires an overall semester GPA of 3.4 and completion of at least 16 credit hours, with at least 12 of those hours in normal letter grades (A through E) and no outstanding “I” grades; part-time students can qualify with the same 3.4 average maintained over 16 credit hours across the preceding 24 months.
At graduation, the School of Arts & Sciences, the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, and the Simon Business School jointly award Latin honors — cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude — based on criteria set by the Steering Committee of the Faculty Council. Individual academic departments separately award a bachelor's degree “with distinction,” “high distinction,” or “highest distinction” for outstanding work in a major, and some departments offer a degree “with honors in research” requiring at least 12 credit hours of designated honors coursework.

Frequently asked questions
What grading scheme does University of Rochester (URochester) use?
Where does this URochester grade scale come from?
Does an academic-dishonesty failure (XE) count differently than a regular E at Rochester?
No — XE and E carry the identical 0.0 grade-point value on the GPA scale. The difference is procedural: XE can only be assigned by the University's Board on Academic Honesty, and it specifically denotes a failure due to academic dishonesty rather than academic performance.

Are D+ and D- grades used at every University of Rochester undergraduate school?
No. The Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences does not award D+ or D- — every other undergraduate program covered by this scale does.
