How grading works at MPC
Monterey Peninsula College grades on a 4.0 scale with five evaluative letter grades: A (4.0), B (3.0), C (2.0), D (1.0), and F (0.0). MPC does not use plus or minus grades — there is no A+, A-, B+, or any other +/- variant anywhere in the catalog.
Pass/No Pass courses use P and NP instead of a letter grade. Some courses are offered only for a letter grade, some only P/NP, and some let the student choose either option at registration; all courses numbered 300 and above are always offered P/NP if graded.

How your GPA is calculated at MPC
Only the five evaluative letter grades (A, B, C, D, F) carry grade points and count toward your GPA. The semester GPA is total grade points earned in the semester divided by total units attempted in letter-graded courses that semester; cumulative GPA divides by all such units ever attempted.
Everything else is excluded from GPA: P and NP ("does not affect a student's grade point average"), I (Incomplete), IP (In Progress), RD (Report Delayed), MW (Military Withdrawal), W (Withdrawal), and EW (Excused Withdrawal) all carry no grade-point value.

Academic and progress notice, pause, and restart at MPC
Students who have attempted at least 12 units at MPC are placed on academic notice if their cumulative GPA in evaluative-grade units falls below 2.0, and removed once it reaches 2.0 or higher again. Students are placed on progress notice when their cumulative percentage of "W," "I," and "NP" units reaches or exceeds 50% of all units attempted.
A student on academic notice is subject to academic pause after three consecutive semesters with a cumulative GPA below 2.0. A student on progress notice is subject to progress pause after three consecutive semesters with "W," "I," and/or "NP" grades in 50% or more of units attempted. A student may petition the Academic Council for academic restart; upon restart they must earn at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA to continue enrollment.

Academic honors at MPC
The Dean's List requires 12 or more units of letter-graded coursework completed in the semester: 4.0 GPA earns Dean's Highest Honors, 3.5–3.99 earns Dean's High Honors, and 3.0–3.49 earns Dean's Honors.
Honors on Conferred Degrees uses the same scale (4.0 Highest Honors; 3.5–3.99 High Honors; 3.0–3.49 Honors), based on cumulative GPA at the time a degree is awarded. Certificates are not eligible for honors acknowledgment.

Does a Pass/No Pass (P or NP) grade affect my GPA at MPC?

How does course repetition work at MPC?
Students who receive a substandard grade of D, F, NC, NP, W, or MW may be limited to a total of three enrollments in that course. After a second substandard attempt, a student must petition the Academic Council for a third or fourth final attempt (course repetition is retroactive to Fall 1995).
