How grading works at Eastern Illinois University

EIU's undergraduate grading system uses just five letter grades — A (4), B (3), C (2), D (1), F (0) — with no plus or minus modifiers at any grade.

A sixth grade, NF (Failure – Non-Attendance), is given when a student stops attending before completing 60% of the term; it is worth 0 grade points and is treated exactly like an F for GPA purposes.

Several marks carry no grade-point value and are not computed in your GPA: I (Incomplete), CR (Credit), NC (No Credit), NNC (No Credit – Non-Attendance), AU (Audit), W (Withdrew), X (No Grade Submitted), and DC (Deferred Credit).

How your GPA is calculated at EIU

Your grade point average is based only on course work taken at Eastern (including Study Abroad, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, and National Student Exchange courses).

Grade points for a course are found by multiplying the grade-point value by the number of semester hours. Your cumulative GPA is the total grade points earned divided by the total semester hours attempted — excluding any courses graded I, CR, DC, NC, NNC, W, AU, or X.

Academic warning, probation, and dismissal at EIU

Once you've attempted at least nine semester hours, a cumulative GPA below 2.00 at the end of a grading period places you on Academic Warning.

Still below 2.00 after a grading period on warning moves you to Academic Probation; you must reach at least a 2.00 GPA each grading period or you will be academically dismissed.

You are also dismissed if your GPA for any grading period is 0.00 while your cumulative GPA is below 2.00.

GPA requirements for graduation at EIU

Bachelor's degree candidates need at least 120 semester hours with a cumulative GPA of 2.00 in all courses attempted, plus a minimum 2.00 GPA in their chosen major.

Teacher education programs require at least a 2.65 GPA, both cumulative and in the major, for graduation.

Dean's List and Honors List at EIU

Undergraduates with a declared major who earn a GPA of 3.80–4.00 (on the 4.00 scale) while completing at least 12 graded semester hours in a fall or spring semester are named to the Dean's List.

Undergraduates with an undeclared major meeting the same GPA and hours criteria are named to the Honors List instead. Neither list is generated for summer terms.

How transfer grades affect your EIU GPA

Credit for a course in which you earned a D at another college will only transfer to EIU if your overall GPA from that institution was at least a C average. English and speech transfer credit require a C or better.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at EIU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at EIU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Eastern Illinois University (EIU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
Does EIU give A+ or plus/minus grades?

No. EIU's undergraduate grading system uses only five plain letter grades — A, B, C, D, and F — with no plus or minus modifiers at any level.

Does an NF grade count against my GPA at EIU?

Yes. NF (Failure – Non-Attendance) is worth 0 grade points and is treated exactly like an F for GPA purposes, even though it appears as a separate grade on your transcript.

What GPA do I need to stay in good academic standing at EIU?

You need a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00. Falling below that triggers Academic Warning, then Probation, and eventually dismissal if you don't get back to 2.00.
