Grading Symbols Beyond the Scale

"FW" (Failing, Unauthorized Withdrawal) carries 0 grade points, the same as "F", and is averaged into the GPA like any other evaluative grade. Incomplete ("I"), In Progress ("IP"), Report Delayed ("RD"), and Withdrawal ("W"/"MW"/"EW") are non-evaluative symbols and are not counted toward units attempted or grade points.

How GPA Is Calculated

GPA is computed by dividing total grade points earned by total units attempted. Units attempted on a P/NP basis are not counted toward the GPA.

Academic Alert and Dismissal

A student is placed on academic alert after attempting at least 12 semester units with a GPA below 2.0 (a "C"), and is removed once the cumulative GPA reaches 2.0 or higher. A student already on academic alert is subject to dismissal after an institutional cumulative GPA below 1.75 in each of three consecutive semesters.

Separately, a progress alert/dismissal track is based on the rate of "W", "I", "NP", and "NC" entries (50% or more of enrolled units) rather than GPA.

GPA Requirement for the AA/AS Degree

For the Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree, students must earn a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better in the major or area of emphasis, with a grade of "C" or better in all courses in the major/emphasis, and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 overall in degree-applicable coursework.

President's Honor List and Phi Theta Kappa

Students enrolled for a letter grade in 12 or more units in a semester with a GPA of 3.5 or higher are placed on the NVC President's Honor List. Graduates completing an AA or AS degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher earn "President's Honors at Graduation" on their diploma and may apply to be the commencement valedictory speaker.

Students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and at least 12 transferable or degree-applicable units are eligible to join the NVC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

GPA Requirement for the Associate Degree for Transfer

The Associate Degree for Transfer (AA-T/AS-T) requires a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better with a "C" or better in all classes in the major. Students planning to transfer to a four-year institution should note that its GPA and grade standards may differ from these local degree requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at NVC?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at NVC?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Napa Valley College (NVC) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
