How GPA is calculated, Pass/No Pass, and repeating courses

Evaluative grades (A, B, C, D, F) are averaged on the basis of their point equivalencies to determine GPA: multiply each course's grade points by its semester hours, add the results across all courses, then divide by the total semester hours attempted. Non-evaluative symbols (I, IP, RD, W, MW, EW) are never used in calculating GPA.

Pass/No Pass. Up to 12 units of Pass/No Pass coursework may count toward a degree or certificate. A "P" (Pass) requires a grade of "C" or better and is not counted in GPA; "NP" (No Pass) is likewise excluded.

Repeating courses. A course graded "D," "F," "NC," "NP," or "W" may be enrolled in up to three times total; Military and Excused Withdrawals ("MW," "EW") don't count against this limit. When a repeat is approved for extenuating circumstances, only the most recent grade is used in the GPA.

Academic renewal. A student may petition once to have up to 18 units of substandard "D," "F," "NC," or "NP" grades excluded from their cumulative GPA, provided at least 12 months have passed since that coursework and at least 12 units have since been completed elsewhere with a 2.0 GPA. Alleviated units remain on the transcript but no longer count toward GPA.

All grade changes must be requested within three years of the original grade.

Good standing, Academic Notice, and Academic Pause

A student is in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 ("C") or higher.

Academic Notice. After attempting at least 12 semester units, a student whose GPA is below 2.0 is placed on Academic Notice; a student is instead placed on Progress Notice once 50% or more of attempted units carry a "W," "I," "NC," or "NP." Two consecutive terms at either Notice level can place a hold on registration until the student completes an Academic Success Workshop. A student is removed from Academic Notice once their cumulative GPA reaches 1.75 or higher (for Progress Notice, once the W/I/NC/NP rate drops below 50%).

Academic Pause. A student already on Academic Notice moves to Academic Pause after three consecutive semesters with a cumulative GPA below 1.75 (or, for Progress Notice, three consecutive semesters at or above the 50% W/I/NC/NP rate). A student on Pause must sit out one semester (excluding summer) before returning on probationary status, though they may appeal or petition for exceptions such as documented extenuating circumstances or military orders.

Minimum GPA to graduate

To be eligible for an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree, a student must complete at least 60 degree-applicable units, all major and general education requirements, and maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA. At least 12 of those units must be completed at MSJC to satisfy the residence requirement.

Graduation With Distinction and President's Honors List

Graduates whose degree-applicable cumulative GPA is 3.5 or higher earn "With Distinction" honors and wear a gold tassel at commencement.

Each semester, students who complete 12 or more units with a GPA of 3.5 or better are named to the President's Honors List, independent of graduation status.

GPA requirements for transfer to CSU/UC

Students transferring to a California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC) campus may transfer up to 70 transferable units from a California Community College; MSJC recommends transferring with at least 60 units to be admitted with junior standing.

To complete an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT), a student needs at least 60 transferable semester units with a minimum overall GPA of 2.0. Cal-GETC general-education coursework must be completed with a "C" or better to meet UC admission requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at MSJC?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at MSJC?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
Does Mt. San Jacinto College use plus/minus grading (A+, B+, etc.)?

No. MSJC's Evaluative Grade Symbols table lists only whole-letter grades — A (4), B (3), C (2), D (1), and F (0) — with no plus or minus modifiers anywhere in the catalog.

Do W, I, P, or NP grades affect my GPA at MSJC?

No. "P" and "NP" (Pass/No Pass) carry no grade-point value and aren't counted in GPA. "I" (Incomplete), "IP" (In Progress), "RD" (Report Delayed), "W" (Withdrawal), "MW" (Military Withdrawal), and "EW" (Excused Withdrawal) are all non-evaluative symbols that MSJC's catalog states are "not used in calculating grade point averages."
