How grading works at Truman College

Harry S Truman College is one of the City Colleges of Chicago (CCC), and follows the CCC district-wide grading policy set out in the Academic Catalog. Most Remedial, Credit, and Skills courses use the standard A–F, 4.0-point scale: A (4), B (3), C (2), D (1), F (0). No plus or minus variant of any letter grade is printed anywhere in this policy.

Some Credit and Skills courses are instead graded on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) basis, set per course — Satisfactory is equivalent to “C” quality work and above, Unsatisfactory to “D” and below. Foundational Studies, Adult Education, and Continuing Education courses use their own non-degree grading bases (S/F, P/R, S/U) that carry no grade-point value at all.

How your GPA is calculated at Truman College

Only the five A–F letter grades carry grade points and count toward GPA. Satisfactory (S) and Unsatisfactory (U) grades are explicitly excluded from GPA calculation, even though the S/U grading basis prints its own 0-point values — those points are not counted in the average.

CCC tracks two GPAs: Graduation GPA (GRAD-GPA), based on all A–F college-level (non-remedial) coursework, and Cumulative GPA (CUM-GPA), calculated the same way but also including remedial coursework. For Allowed Repeatable Courses, only the most recent attempt (up to the allowed maximum) counts toward GPA; for an ordinary repeated course, only the last grade earned counts, even if it isn't the higher grade. Transfer credit, credit by prior-learning assessment, and credit by standardized exam may apply toward graduation but are excluded from GRAD-GPA.

Academic standing at Truman College

A student must maintain a Cumulative GPA (CUM-GPA) of 2.0 or higher to remain in good Academic Standing at any City College of Chicago, including Truman.

Carrying a heavier course load also has a GPA gate: enrolling in 19 or more credit hours in a Fall or Spring term (10 or more in Summer) requires both a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and written permission from the Academic Vice President.

Graduation requirements at Truman College

To graduate from any credit degree program at Truman College, a student must earn a grade of “C” or better in every course used to satisfy core curriculum and/or general education requirements, and hold a minimum Graduation GPA (GRAD-GPA) of 2.0 or higher. Elective courses with a “D” or “S” final grade may still count toward graduation. Students who graduated before August 1, 2013 needed either a GRAD-GPA or CUM-GPA of 2.0 or higher.

For a Certificate of Completion, students must earn a “C” or better in every certificate-specific course graded on the A–F basis, or an “S” in every certificate-specific course graded on the S/U basis.

Academic honors at Truman College

Full-time students (12 or more credit hours in a term) earn term-based scholastic honors based on their term GPA: Honor's List at 3.0–3.49, Dean's List at 3.5–3.99, and the Presidential Scholars List at 4.0.

Graduates of Associate Degree programs earn Degree Honors based on their Graduation GPA: Honors at 3.0–3.49 and High Honors at 3.5 or higher.

How transfer credit affects your GPA at Truman College

Transfer credit — including military credit, credit by assessment of prior learning, and credit by standardized examination/testing — can apply toward graduation, but is excluded from the Graduation GPA (GRAD-GPA) calculation. Transfer credit cannot be used to exclude or replace a CCC grade already factored into a student's GPA.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at Harry S Truman College?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at Harry S Truman College?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Harry S Truman College GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
Does Truman College use plus/minus (+/−) grading?

No. The CCC Academic Catalog's A–F Grading Basis for Remedial, Credit, and Skills courses prints exactly five grades — A, B, C, D, F — with no plus or minus variant of any of them.

Do Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U) grades affect my GPA at Truman College?

No. The catalog states plainly that Satisfactory (S) and Unsatisfactory (U) grades “are not included in a student's GPA calculation,” and repeats the same exclusion for Graduation GPA specifically.
