How USD Calculates Your GPA

GPA hours include all credit hours in which a student receives a grade of A, B, C, D, or F, except where adjustments are made for repeated courses or academic amnesty. The grade point average is determined by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of GPA hours.

The university calculates several types of GPA: Institutional GPA (credits earned at USD, used for degree completion and Honors Designation), System Term GPA (credits earned at any South Dakota Board of Regents university in a given term, used for progression status), Transfer GPA (officially transferred credits from an accredited institution outside the Regental system), and Cumulative GPA (all credits earned, transfer plus system).

When a course is repeated, all attempts appear on the transcript, but only the last grade earned is used in the cumulative grade point average.

Students may drop up to 6 courses over their academic career without GPA penalty (a WD grade). Any drop beyond the first 6 receives a WFL grade, which calculates into the GPA as an F.

Academic Standing and Progression

To remain in good academic standing, a student must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher.

A student is placed on academic probation when the cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 at the end of a fall or spring term, and returns to good standing once the cumulative GPA is raised back to 2.0 or higher.

A student on academic probation is placed on academic suspension — for a minimum of two academic terms — if they earn below a 2.0 term GPA at the end of the next fall or spring term.

Transfer GPA

Transfer GPA is calculated from credits officially transferred from an accredited college or university outside the South Dakota Regental system. When a letter grade that normally calculates into the GPA exists for a non-academic course (for example, credit earned via examination), it is included in the Transfer GPA. The Cumulative GPA combines transfer credit with system (USD and other Regental university) credit.

How do I convert semester GPA to cumulative GPA at USD?
Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester GPAs across every semester: (semester GPA₁ × credits₁ + … + semester GPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + … + creditsₙ). Save each semester to the tracker on this page, by course or as a quick semester GPA + credits entry, and it works out your cumulative GPA on every save, edit and delete.
