South Dakota State University (SDSU) GPA Calculator

SDSU calculates several grade point averages each term (Fall, Spring, Summer):

• Institutional GPA — credits earned at SDSU specifically; used for degree completion and Honors Designation at graduation.
• System Term GPA — credits earned in a given term at any of the six South Dakota Board of Regents universities; used to determine minimum progression status.
• Cumulative GPA — all credits earned (transfer plus system credit); used for minimum progression status, degree completion, and Honors Designation at graduation.

The cumulative GPA is obtained by dividing grade points by the number of all hours attempted, counting all hours graded A, B, C, D, or F.

Repeated courses: when a course is repeated, only the most recent grade is calculated into the cumulative GPA and applied to degree requirements if passed, for both undergraduate and graduate coursework.

Credit earned by examination (grade of CR) is not included in the calculation of the semester or cumulative GPA.

Undergraduates may register for 19 or more credits in a term only with high-achievement history, or by dean approval; an overload of 19+ credit hours additionally requires a cumulative GPA of 2.70.

A cumulative GPA at or above 2.0 is Good Academic Standing, reviewed at the end of each Fall and Spring term.

A student whose cumulative GPA falls below the standard is placed on Academic Probation and must earn a System Term GPA meeting the standard to be returned to good standing.

A student on probation who fails to meet the term and/or cumulative GPA standard by the next standing review is placed on Academic Suspension for a minimum of two academic terms.

Newly enrolling transfer and dual-credit students with prior credit are not placed on probation until they have completed one academic term at a Regental university.

Dean's List (full-time undergraduates, end of Fall/Spring terms): requires a minimum of 12 credit hours in courses numbered 100-699 during the term and a System Term GPA of at least 3.50. Students with an F, I, U, RI, or RU grade are not eligible regardless of GPA. The designation does not appear on the transcript.

Academic Recognition for Part-Time Students (fewer than 12 credits/term): requires at least 12 total credit hours completed prior to the current semester, 3-11 credit hours of courses numbered 100-699 in the current term, and a System Term GPA of at least 3.50. The same F/I/U/RI/RU ineligibility applies.

Transfer GPA is based on credits earned and officially transferred from an accredited college or university outside the South Dakota Board of Regents system. When a letter grade that would normally calculate into the GPA exists for a non-academic course (for example, credit earned via examination), it is included in the Transfer GPA.
