Grades That Don't Count Toward GPA
Beyond the A-F letter grades, Germanna uses several notations that carry no grade points and are excluded from the GPA calculation: I (Incomplete), P (Pass, capped at 7 credit hours toward a degree or certificate), U (Unsatisfactory), W (Withdrawal), R (Re-enroll, Developmental Studies only), S (Satisfactory, Developmental Studies only), and X (Audit).
To receive any letter grade, a student must have attended at least one class meeting (or the distance-learning equivalent, measured by course participation).

How GPA Is Calculated
GPA is determined by dividing the total grade points earned by the total credits attempted; courses that do not generate grade points are not included in credits attempted, and learning support (developmental) credits are excluded entirely.
Germanna tracks three GPAs: a semester GPA (that term's courses only), a cumulative GPA (all courses attempted, maintained continuously), and a curriculum GPA (only courses applicable to the student's program, used to confirm graduation eligibility).
Repeating a course: students are limited to two enrollments in the same course without special approval. For courses repeated since Fall 2021, the highest grade earned counts toward the cumulative and curriculum GPA (all prior attempts remain on the transcript); courses repeated before Fall 2021 instead use the last grade taken.

Academic Standing
Students are expected to maintain a 2.00 GPA and make normal progress toward graduation.
- Good Standing: minimum 2.00 GPA per semester.
- Academic Warning: semester GPA below 2.00.
- Academic Probation: cumulative GPA below 1.50 (after 12+ credit hours attempted); lifted once the cumulative average reaches 1.75.
- Academic Suspension: a semester GPA below 1.50 while on probation (only after 24+ credit hours attempted).
- Academic Dismissal: failing to reach a 2.00 GPA in the reinstatement semester after suspension, or failing to maintain at least 1.75 in each subsequent semester until the cumulative GPA reaches 1.75.
Separately, to meet Satisfactory Academic Progress a student needs a cumulative GPA of at least 1.50 (1-15 credits attempted), 1.75 (16-30 credits), or 2.00 (more than 30 credits), plus a 67% course-completion rate.

Transfer Credit Policy
Coursework transferred to Germanna must be collegiate-level coursework applicable to the student's curriculum, at a level of instruction resulting in competencies at least equivalent to Germanna's own; coursework from regionally accredited institutions typically meets this standard.
No transfer credit is given for courses with a grade lower than C.
