Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) GPA Calculator

CVCC's cumulative grade point average (GPA) is a per-credit-hour average based on a 4.000 scale, computed only from curriculum courses numbered 100 or higher for which a grade of A, B, C, D, F, or WF was received. Grades in courses below the 100 level are not counted. To calculate it, multiply each course's grade-point value by its attempted credit hours to get grade points earned, sum those, and divide by total hours attempted.

Supplemental courses (ENG 025, MAT 025, MAT 045) count toward attempted and earned credits but are excluded from all GPA computations.

Curriculum courses graded D or F may be repeated up to twice; when a course is repeated, only the highest grade and its hours are used in the cumulative GPA, while the first attempt's grade still appears on the transcript. Courses graded C or higher may only be repeated with special permission from the appropriate Dean.

A student whose cumulative GPA is based on 12 or more credit hours at the 100 level or above and falls below 2.000 is placed on academic probation. The student is notified by the Student Records Office and must meet with an Enrollment Manager for academic counseling before being permitted to register again. A student remains on probation, potentially for multiple semesters, until their cumulative GPA reaches 2.000 or higher.

A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.000 is required to graduate from all curriculum programs at CVCC; individual programs may set additional requirements.

Students graduating with a final cumulative GPA of 3.500 up to 3.800 are recognized as graduating with "Honors"; those with a final cumulative GPA of 3.800 or higher are recognized as graduating with "High Honors." Both distinctions are noted on the official transcript and diploma.

Each fall and spring semester, students completing 6 or more GPA-counted credit hours with a semester GPA of 3.800 or higher are named to the President's List; those with a semester GPA of 3.500 up to 3.800 are named to the Dean's List.
