College of William and Mary (W&M) GPA Calculator

William & Mary uses a four-point grading system. A student's GPA is calculated by dividing the sum of earned quality points by the sum of attempted hours for all courses receiving a grade used in calculating the GPA. The grade point average is reported to two decimals without rounding, and only coursework taken at William & Mary counts toward it.

Courses graded D, F, R, or W may be repeated for a grade; both the original and later grade appear on the transcript, but only the most recent grade counts toward GPA. Courses graded A, B, C, G, I, or P generally cannot be repeated for credit except as an audit.

An Incomplete ("I") automatically converts to an "F" if the coursework isn't finished by the last day of classes of the following regular semester, unless the instructor grants a one-semester extension.

Eligible juniors and seniors may take up to four elective courses Pass/Fail. A Pass does not count toward GPA, but a Fail does.

To remain in good standing, undergraduates must meet minimum cumulative GPA and credit benchmarks each semester: 1.7 after semester 1-2 (21 credits), 1.85 after semester 3 (33 credits), and 2.0 from semester 4 onward (48 through 120 credits).

A GPA below 2.0 in any semester triggers Academic Warning. Falling below the Continuance Standards places a student on Academic Probation, which caps enrollment at 16 credits, bars incompletes, and requires a 2.0 semester GPA and at least 12 passed credits to clear. Failing to meet probation terms results in Academic Suspension.

Suspended students may petition the Committee on Academic Exceptions for reinstatement, but readmission is not automatic, and a second suspension makes reinstatement extremely unlikely.

To graduate, students must complete 120 credits in academic subjects with a grade point average of 2.0 both overall and within their major.

The Dean's List recognizes full-time, degree-seeking undergraduates who complete at least 12 standard letter-graded credit hours (excluding Pass and Deferred-Grade courses) and earn a 3.6 GPA in a single semester. Pass/fail and audit courses don't count toward the 12-credit minimum. Dean's List recognition is noted on the academic transcript.
