Norfolk State University (NSU) GPA Calculator

Several notations appear on Norfolk State transcripts alongside the letter grades but carry no quality points and are not counted in the GPA average:

• P — Pass/Fail (not available to graduate students except in courses designated for pass/fail credit)
• AU — Audit, entered by the Registrar
• I — Incomplete Official
• W — Withdrawal
• NG — No Grade Reported
• S — Satisfactory
• # — Forgiven

The grade point average is obtained by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of completed semester hours.

A student who receives a final grade less than an "A" in a course may repeat it, at Norfolk State or at the original institution (via consortium or cross-registration), prior to completing the degree. Only the credit and quality points for the highest grade earned count toward the cumulative GPA; all attempts remain on the transcript.

An "I" (Incomplete) may be assigned only if the student is passing and has completed 80% of coursework; missed work is due by the 7th week of the following semester or the grade converts to "F". No student may graduate with an "I" on the record.

Minimum cumulative GPA required by credit hours earned: Freshman (fewer than 30 hours) 1.700; Sophomore (30–59) 1.800; Junior (60–89) 2.000; Senior (90 or more) 2.000.

Falling below the standard triggers a first and then second warning probation, each requiring an Academic Performance Contract and a Study Skills Seminar. A student who does not meet the required GPA after two warnings is subject to suspension, with a right of written appeal to the Suspension Appeals Committee. Students must also complete at least 67% of all attempted courses and may not exceed 150% of the credits needed for their degree to remain in satisfactory academic progress.

A minimum of 240 quality points and 120 completed semester hours (a 2.0, or "C", average) is required for graduation, with all departmental and school requirements also met.

Students must earn a minimum grade of "C" in all courses required by their degree program — a "C-" or lower does not satisfy this requirement — and a grade of C or higher in all courses in the major. A degree program may set minimum grades higher than "C".

Dean's List requires a minimum 3.50 term GPA with no "I" or missing grades and no grade below "C". Honor Roll requires a term GPA of 3.00–3.49 with no "I" or missing grades.

Graduation honors are based on cumulative resident GPA: Summa Cum Laude, 3.7500–4.0000; Magna Cum Laude, 3.5000–3.7499; Cum Laude, 3.0000–3.4999.
