How grading works at Penn

Penn grades undergraduates on a 4.0 scale: A+ and A both count as 4.0, A- as 3.7, B+ as 3.3, B as 3.0, B- as 2.7, C+ as 2.3, C as 2.0, C- as 1.7, D+ as 1.3, D as 1.0, and F as 0.0. There is no D-. This scale is shared across all of Penn's undergraduate schools — the College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Nursing, and The Wharton School — though each school sets its own procedural policies around grading.

How your GPA is calculated at Penn

Your grade point average (GPA) is calculated at the end of every term based on Penn's grading scale. Policies regarding grades vary by school, so students should consult their academic advisors about school-specific grading and GPA procedures.

Academic standing at Penn

Penn expects students to maintain a minimum level of academic performance or risk being placed on Academic Probation. Requirements for good academic standing vary by school; students enrolled in more than one undergraduate school are subject to the academic standing policies of both schools.

Does Penn still award a Dean's List?

No, not since July 1, 2023. Before that date, the Dean's List citation appeared on the transcript and was awarded annually to any student who achieved a combined GPA of 3.7 for the fall and spring semesters, provided they completed 6 or more credit units for letter grades, received no grades lower than C, and completed all courses on time with no Incompletes, NRs, or GRs. A sanction of probation or greater for a Code of Academic Integrity, Code of Student Conduct, or Sexual Violence/Relationship Violence/Stalking Policy violation made a student ineligible for that academic year.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at U Penn?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at U Penn?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this University of Pennsylvania (U Penn) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
Does Penn award an A+, and is it worth more than an A?

Penn does award an A+, but it's capped at the same value as an A — 4.0. There's no higher grade-point value for A+ on Penn's scale; both letters count identically toward your GPA.

Does Penn award a D-?

No. Penn's Grading Scale table stops at D (1.0), and the catalog says so directly: "There is no D-."

Do Wharton, Engineering, and Nursing students use a different GPA scale at Penn?

No. The same 4.0 grading scale applies across all of Penn's undergraduate schools. Individual schools set their own procedural policies — academic standing thresholds, grade grievance steps, incomplete-grade deadlines, and pass/fail eligibility — but the underlying grade-point values are shared university-wide.

How does an Incomplete affect my GPA at Penn?

An Incomplete carries no grade-point value while pending. It's granted solely at the instructor's discretion, and students are generally expected to finish the work by the fifth week of the next semester — unfinished coursework may result in an F grade or delay graduation. Students cannot graduate with an Incomplete on their undergraduate record.

Can I take courses pass/fail at Penn?

Students may be eligible to take certain courses pass/fail, but policies on which courses qualify and how pass/fail is handled vary by school and course — check with your specific school for its rules.
