California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) GPA Calculator

Effective Fall Quarter 1996, Cal State LA uses plus/minus grading (A through D-, plus F) for both undergraduate and graduate grade point calculations. Undergraduates may also elect a nontraditional CR/NC basis, or an A, B, C-/NC basis, for eligible courses (up to 30 semester units each, whether elected or designated); required major, minor, and general education courses are generally excluded from these options.

Administrative symbols used alongside letter grades: CR (Credit) and NC (No Credit) are not included in GPA computation. I (Incomplete) is an interim grade that, if not resolved within one year, is charged as IC (Incomplete Charged) and counted as an F in the GPA (or as NC if the course was taken credit/no-credit). WU (Unauthorized Withdrawal) is equivalent to an F for GPA purposes. RP (Report in Progress, for thesis/dissertation-type courses) and W (Withdrawal) and RD (Report Delayed) do not affect the GPA.

The GPA is computed by dividing total grade points earned by total units attempted (undergraduate) or units taken for GPA (graduate); CR and NC grades are excluded from the calculation. Undergraduate students are expected to maintain a C (2.0) average; graduate students a B (3.0) average; postbaccalaureate students a 2.5 average, in all courses attempted at Cal State LA and at any other college or university attended.

Undergraduates may not repeat for credit a course already passed with C (2.0) or better (B, 3.0, or better for postbaccalaureate/graduate students) without an approved plan. Up to 16 semester-units of repeated Cal State LA coursework qualify for grade replacement (the new grade replaces the former grade in the GPA); an additional 12 semester-units may be repeated under "grade averaging," where both the original and repeated grades remain in the GPA.

Undergraduates are placed on academic notice when their Cal State LA or cumulative GPA falls below C (2.0), and disqualified if it falls below the following levels by class standing:

Disqualified students on extended academic notice must earn better than a C (2.0) average each semester until their GPA clears the threshold for their class level. Readmission after disqualification is not considered until at least two semesters have elapsed. Separately, undergraduates may petition under Academic Renewal to disregard up to two semesters (three quarters) of prior coursework toward the baccalaureate, provided they have maintained a GPA since that work of at least 3.0 (15-29 units completed), 2.5 (30-44 units), or 2.0 (45+ units) at the time of petition.

Graduate students are placed on academic notice if their GPA falls below B (3.0) in their degree program (and in all courses since admission); postbaccalaureate students, below 2.5 in all coursework since admission. Both are subject to disqualification if the GPA is not raised above these thresholds after 12 units or two semesters in residence, whichever is later; classified graduate students whose GPA falls more than nine grade points below B (3.0) are disqualified outright.
