How grading works at University of Karachi

University of Karachi (UoK) uses an absolute grading system: each course score is converted to a letter grade and a fixed grade point on a 0.0 to 4.0 scale, using the university's official Numeric Score / Alphabetic Grade / Grade Point table. The table applies to all degree programmes at University of Karachi except the School of Law, which follows its own separate rules.

The letter grades run from A+ at the top down to a failing grade at the bottom of the scale — the exact percentage bands and grade points for each letter are shown in the calculator above.

How University of Karachi calculates CGPR

UoK calls its cumulative average a CGPR (Cumulative Grade Point Ratio) rather than CGPA, though it is calculated the same way:

  • Grade points in a course = credit hours of the course × the grade point equivalent to the score earned.
  • CGPR = total grade points across all courses ÷ total credit hours attempted.

A student whose CGPR falls short of the required graduation floor gets one further chance to raise it, by re-appearing in up to two courses graded C-, D+, or D (i.e. courses scored below 61%).

Promotion rules and degree conversion at University of Karachi

A UoK student is not promoted to the next class/year if they fail to clear at least 80% of their courses. A student who repeats a course is not given a merit rank/position for that course.

Students who complete their first two years of a BS programme can, on request, have their admission to the third year cancelled and their degree converted to an Associate Degree instead (where the programme allows it); students who do this cannot re-enrol in BS third year in the same department afterward.

Minimum CGPR to graduate from University of Karachi

To be awarded a degree, a UoK student must obtain a minimum CGPR of 2.2 or 2.45, whichever floor applies to their specific degree programme.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at UoK?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at UoK?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this University of Karachi (UoK) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What CGPR do you need to graduate from University of Karachi?

You need a minimum CGPR of 2.2 or 2.45, depending on which floor applies to your specific degree programme at University of Karachi.

How is CGPR calculated at University of Karachi?
