How grading works at IIUI

International Islamic University Islamabad uses an absolute grading system for undergraduate studies: letter grades are assigned against fixed percentage cut-offs, not against the distribution of a class. Grades are awarded on a 0 to 4 grade-point scale in half-point steps.

IIUI's undergraduate scale has eight grades — A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, D and F — with no minus grades. An A is awarded from 80% upward, and each half-point step down covers a five-mark band; the exact marks-to-grade-point mapping is shown in the Grade Scale Reference on this page. The lowest passing grade is D (50–54%, 1.00 grade points); anything below 50% is an F and carries 0.00.

How IIUI calculates SGPA and CGPA

IIUI reports a Semester GPA (SGPA) for each term and a Cumulative GPA (CGPA) across all semesters from admission onward. Both are credit-hour weighted: the CGPA is the sum of (grade point × credit hours) for every credit course, divided by the total credit hours attempted, so higher-credit courses weigh more heavily.

  • A W (withdrawal) grade — recorded when a student withdraws from a course in weeks 4–6 of the semester — has no impact on the CGPA.
  • An I (incomplete) grade, given when a student misses the terminal exam for exceptional reasons, also does not affect the CGPA.
  • Extra, preparatory and non-credit courses are not counted toward the CGPA.

Academic probation at IIUI

A student whose academic performance falls below the minimum degree requirement is placed on probation. For BS, BBA, BSc Technology and LLB programs, probation applies over the CGPA range 1.00 to 2.00 and runs across up to three semesters — Placed on Probation (POP), Probation Continued (PC-1), then Probation Continued (PC-2), after which a student who has not cleared is declared ceased.

A student on probation must register through their academic advisor, who may direct them to retake failed courses first in order to raise the CGPA and clear the probation. If a student is declared ceased with a CGPA below the minimum probation range, re-admission to the same program is not allowed, though fresh admission may be sought.

Minimum CGPA to graduate from IIUI

To be awarded an undergraduate degree, an IIUI student must complete the prescribed credit hours for their program and achieve a minimum CGPA of 2.00. A single-major degree requires at least 72 credit hours in the major, with a minimum 30 credits of General Education across all undergraduate programs.

A student who is below the 2.00 award floor at the end of the final semester may be allowed to repeat up to six (6) courses in a subsequent semester to improve the CGPA, provided the program's maximum time limit is not exceeded. Standard undergraduate degrees (BS/BBA/BSc Technology) have a minimum duration of 2 years and a maximum of 4 years.

Medals and distinctions at IIUI

IIUI awards medals, prizes, rolls of honour and distinctions on the basis of CGPA. The minimum criterion for such an award in any undergraduate program is a CGPA of 3.80/4.00. Where two or more students share the same CGPA, the award is decided by the highest percentage among them, and awards are made on merit separately for male and female students in each program.

A student is not eligible for any academic honour if they have a W on their transcript or have repeated any course. In disciplines with fewer than 10 students no position is awarded, though a distinction or gold medal may still be given.

How course exemptions and credit transfer work at IIUI

Freshly admitted students may be granted exemption only for courses they passed with a minimum “B” grade (70% marks). Re-admitted IIUI students may be exempted from previously passed courses of the same level if passed with at least a “C” grade. Total exemption is capped at 60% of the passed courses / credit hours (or the limit set by the relevant accreditation council).

For re-admissions, the grades of exempted courses are transferred against the new academic record; departmental exemption committees review course contents before recommending any exemption.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at IIUI?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at IIUI?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this International Islamic University (IIUI) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What CGPA do you need to graduate from IIUI?

You need a minimum CGPA of 2.00 to be awarded an undergraduate degree from IIUI, along with completing the prescribed credit hours for your program. A student below 2.00 at the end of the final semester may repeat up to six courses to improve their CGPA.

What is the minimum passing grade at IIUI?

The lowest passing grade is D, awarded for 50–54% and worth 1.00 grade points. Marks below 50% earn an F (0.00 grade points), which must be cleared by repeating the course.

Does IIUI use minus grades?

No. IIUI's undergraduate grade set is A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, D and F — there are no minus grades (no A−, B− or C−). Grades run in half-point steps from 4.00 down to 0.00, with an A from 80%. The full mapping is in the Grade Scale Reference on this page.

What CGPA do you need for a gold medal or distinction at IIUI?

The minimum criterion for a medal, prize, roll of honour or distinction in any IIUI undergraduate program is a CGPA of 3.80/4.00. Students who have a “W” on their transcript or who have repeated any course are not eligible.

When is an IIUI student placed on probation?

An IIUI undergraduate is placed on probation when their CGPA falls in the 1.00–2.00 range. Probation runs across up to three semesters (POP, PC-1, PC-2); a student who has not raised the CGPA to 2.00 by then is declared ceased.

If I repeat a course at IIUI, which grade counts?

You must repeat any course in which you got an F (the earlier F still appears on the transcript). You may also repeat up to six courses passed with a D or D+; in that case both grades are recorded but only the better grade counts toward your CGPA, and the improvement is marked “(Imp)”. Note that repeating any course makes you ineligible for academic medals and distinctions.
