How grading works at Virtual University of Pakistan

VU uses an absolute, marks-based grading scheme on a 0.00–4.00 scale: every course score maps to a letter grade and a grade point via a fixed percentage table, not a class curve. The bands and their grade points are listed in the Grade Scale Reference on this page.

Within most bands, VU's own formula lets the grade point rise continuously with the exact score rather than staying flat across the whole band — for example, a course score of 84% earns 3.93 grade points, closer to a full A than the 80% floor of the A− band would suggest. Only the flat A/A+ (4.00) and F (0.00) grades don't vary with score inside their range.

How VU calculates GPA and CGPA

VU reports a Grade Point Average (GPA) for each semester and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) across all semesters taken. Both are credit-hour weighted:

  • GPA = sum of (course credit hours × grade point earned) for the semester, divided by total semester credit hours.
  • CGPA = sum of (course credit hours × grade point earned) across all semesters, divided by total credit hours taken.
  • When a course is repeated or improved, it is counted only once toward the CGPA, using the highest GPA earned for that course.

Probation and passing floors at VU

The minimum passing semester GPA at VU is 1.9 for the first semester. A student who misses this is placed on probation:

  • GPA below 1.9 in semester 1 → probation in semester 2.
  • Still below 1.9 in semester 2 → probation continues.
  • GPA below 2.00 in semester 3 → the student is dropped from the rolls.

A student on probation in their very first semester cannot freeze the following semester — probation must be cleared first. Separately, a student must score at least 40% marks in aggregate for a course, with a minimum of 20% in the final exam and 20% in semester work (including the Mid Semester Exam) counted separately; no grace marks are awarded. An F grade or attendance below 70% in a conventional-mode course both require repeating that course.

Minimum CGPA to graduate from VU

To be awarded a degree, a VU student must complete all prescribed program requirements and achieve a minimum CGPA of 2.00. This floor is stated identically across VU's Bachelor, MS/M.Phil, and PhD program regulations.

A student who finishes their required credit hours may choose to graduate immediately or continue registering in courses (up to 21 credit hours per semester) to improve their CGPA, but may only repeat courses where the grade earned was below a B.

Gold medals and merit positions at VU

VU awards a Gold Medal each year at convocation to the graduate with the highest CGPA in a degree program, subject to a minimum CGPA of 3.50.

Separately, VU publishes a Merit Positions List each graduating semester. The top three students qualify only if they: earned a CGPA of 3.50 or above; completed the program within its prescribed minimum duration without a break; never used a semester-freeze; have no unfair-means or disciplinary conviction; and have no repeated, failed, exempted, transferred, or converted course. No academic distinction is awarded to students of 2-year ADP or BA/B.Sc. programs.

Course exemptions and credit transfer at VU

Students admitted on the basis of course exemption or transfer of course credit hours must complete their program within the timeframe set by VU's Equivalence Committee. A student who is re-admitted to a program is exempted from any course they previously passed with a grade higher than C.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at VU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at VU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Virtual University of Pakistan (VU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What CGPA do you need to graduate from Virtual University of Pakistan?

You need a minimum CGPA of 2.00 to graduate from VU, along with completing all prescribed program requirements. This floor applies across Bachelor, MS/M.Phil, and PhD programs.

What is the minimum passing grade at VU?

The lowest passing letter grade is D, covering scores from 50% to 60%, worth 1.00–1.99 grade points depending on the exact score. Below 50% is an F (0.00 grade points, fail).

When is a VU student placed on probation?

A VU student is placed on probation if their semester GPA falls below 1.9 in the first semester. Probation continues if the second semester's GPA is still below 1.9, and a GPA below 2.00 in the third semester results in the student being dropped from the university's rolls.

Does VU's grade point stay fixed within each letter grade band?

Not for most grades. Between A− and D, VU's grade point rises continuously with the exact score inside the band rather than staying flat — for example, an 84% score earns 3.93 grade points, not the band-floor 3.66. Only A/A+ (flat 4.00) and F (flat 0.00) don't vary within their range.

What CGPA does VU require for a Gold Medal?

A minimum CGPA of 3.50 is required, and the medal goes to the graduate with the highest CGPA in each degree program that year.
